During World War 2, a Dutch minesweeper evaded the Japanese for eight days disguised as an island. The crew covered the decks in cut trees and painted exposed surfaces to look like rocks. They moved only at night and anchored closed to shore by day, eventually escaping to Australia.

At the age of 15, Jim Carrey quit school and became a janitor to support his family after his father lost his job. They were living out of a van. He also used to carry a baseball bat in his janitor cart because "I was so angry I just wanted to beat the heck out of something."

Wendy's founder Dave Thomas was worried that kids may see his success as a high school dropout an excuse to do the same, so he went back to high school and earned his GED at the age of 60.

During the start of Operation Good Hope in 1994, United States military forces were supposed to land on the beaches of Mogadishu under the cover of darkness, to provide immediate relief for the refugees of the Rwandan genocide. Instead, they were met by CNN who was covering the landing live on television.
