The knight carefully made his way through the dense forest. According to the map, a little more, and he will come out directly to the cave of the moon dragon. It was a very unusual lizard. While all his relatives flew only during the day, since the sun gave them strength, the lunar one rose into the air at night. Therefore, people decided that the dragon receives energy from the moon and was nicknamed accordingly. The inhabitants of the nearby town were even proud that their dragon was not the same as everywhere else. This, however, did not prevent them from dreaming of liberation from such a neighborhood.
Lance walked very slowly, trying not to step on any fragile branch once again. He knew full well how sharp the hearing of dragons was.
Here it is, the cave. Strange, but the dragon did not at all make secrets from the location of his dwelling. While Lance saw the lizard, he was just admiring the moonlight on a very beautiful shield made of an incomprehensible shiny material. Like all dragons, he was an avid collector. But he collected not only gold, but everything that he liked.
Lance came closer and with a loud voice, as he had done more than once, challenged the dragon to fight. No attention.
The call sounded again. Same result.
"Is he deaf?" Lance thought angrily. As he got closer, he literally screamed.
“I, Lance, the dragon hunter, challenge you to a fight. And I'll make you hear, scaly creature!
“I can hear you perfectly,” came the reply. The dragon's voice was soft. “But for a moment it seemed to me that if I did not pay attention, you might disappear, turn out to be just a hallucination. What do you think?
Lance was taken aback. Never had he met a stranger dragon. All his logic, based on his life experience, told him that dragons should rush into battle at the first call. It should be so, because ... Yes, simply because it cannot be otherwise.
The dragon turned its green muzzle towards the knight and huge, equally green eyes looked at Lance. They had no rage. Only understanding and some kind of quiet sadness.
-I've come to fight you! Lance said, more uncertain than before.
-Why? – followed question.
-Because it's my duty to protect people from people like you.
-What kind? - in the voice of the dragon and in his eyes showed sincere curiosity.
-Dragons. You and we humans cannot live in the same world. Someone has to leave.
- For the first time I meet such a smart and honest dragon slayer. If you knew how tired I am of the eternal nonsense about goodness and justice, for the sake of which I, in fact, should be destroyed.
- There was someone before me.
-Their bones are in the corner of the cave. Just like weapons. You can see. Suddenly, something pops up.
