“Due to the Russian war in Ukraine, I lost the opportunity to live in my house and I had to come to the UK with my daughter. In Ukraine, I was a self-employed attorney. I had a lot of litigation and interesting work.
I was in love with my work and dreamed of huge development. But Russian troops destroyed my house and I had to escape the occupation. My house was in the Buchansky district of the Kyiv region. Now, I have nowhere to go back, so I dream of building my future here with my daughter.
I'm looking through the job descriptions in the legal services industry, I strongly believe that I am a good fit for an Associated Lawyer and would love the opportunity to become a valued member of a legal firm”.

It’s time to present another talented applicant affected by the russian invasion of Ukraine. Please welcome…
OSMIRKO IRYNA (Ирина Осьмирко)
📧Email: [email protected]
💻Professional and educational experience:
Iryna is a third year student of Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University (International Law Program).
Iryna worked as a legal student at JŠK advokátni kancelár (Czech Republic) and Legal Clinic of Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University (Ukraine).
Iryna has also gained a moot court experience, successfully participating in 2021 II National Moot Court Competition on Humanitarian Law (2 place) and Ukrainian Mini-Moot of VI Jessup Summer School (1 place). She also took part in various legal events, including 2021 ELSA Model, Summer Academy in Public International Law “International Law as an Act of Communication”, The Centre for International Law “Erga Omnes”, International School of Justice “Transitional Justice: World Experience and Ukrainian Context Workshop”, training on ethics, integrity and anti-corruption training for law students, organized by the University of East England (the UK) in cooperation with the USAID New Justice Program.
🇺🇦Below we publish Iryna's story on how the russian invasion of Ukraine has affected her career:
“Just over a month ago, I was an ordinary student at a Ukrainian university, stepping over many difficulties every day, but going towards my goals of moving abroad, communicating in English, studying, and working in the field of international law. I have been developing in these directions, taking part in Moot Courts, taking a lot of courses, training, and law schools, knowing that one day I would be able to defend human rights on the international level and be engaged in diplomacy and the international law-making process. I have dreamed to work in the sphere of public international law, some international judicial institution, or the UN.
I had hoped to take my first conscious step into this field through an internship at the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the spring, but unfortunately, that was not the case, war came into my house. It pushed me to flee abroad, although it was not how I had imagined it in peacetime. Now I realize that all the obstacles I have overcome throughout my life are just dust, as there is nothing more terrifying than losing my life and my future. I now have no doubts about my purpose, I am completely sure that I have always been interested in humanitarian law, international criminal law, and human rights law for a reason.
I would like to believe that thanks to international law and diplomacy, peace can be ensured, those who need it can be protected, and such a world system can be built in which there is no place for war and crimes against humanity, in which guilty will be punished.
I feel even more responsible for my future, and the goal to defend human rights is justified by more than just curiosity. This dream is imbued with pain. It is unequivocally my mission.
I want to invest in my future by getting new knowledge, acquaintances, skills, and financial opportunities. As a student of international law, I truly understand, how important is to join the international community, and carry out the international exchange, because it is a way to success. I want to achieve my goals in spite of all obstacles on my way.”

Besides this, he is acting as a volunteer for the Ukrainian Bar Association, preparing articles on PIL, including international humanitarian law and human rights. Viktor is interested in investment arbitration and hopes to gain some experience in this field.
🇺🇦Below we publish Viktor’s story on how the russian invasion of Ukraine has affected his career:
“Before the war, I coached a team taking part in the Eastern European Foreign Investments moot court competition together with my friend. I hoped to gain experience in coaching a team for the fists time in my life and learn more about investment arbitration, but this moot court was suspended because of the war.
I planned to expand my network within the arbitration community by visiting professional events and organizing offline gatherings for young practitioners, but now it is impossible since all events were canceled, and almost all my colleagues have left Kyiv.
Besides that, I finally started to visit the gym but abandoned my new habit of working out regularly since I left Kyiv due to the war. Now, as the future of Ukraine appears very uncertain, I consider moving abroad when the prohibition for men to leave the country is lifted, although I have never planned to move to another country before.”

I came to London two weeks ago and, currently, I am looking for a new job opportunity. I have never wanted to leave my country, as I adore Ukraine and Kyiv. Now I am alone in a different country and need to start everything from scratch. But I believe in the bright future of Ukraine and Ukrainians and that we shall rebuild our great country together, no matter where each of us is now!”

Dear friends,
JAL LAUNCHES A NEW INITIATIVE AIMED AT SUPPORTING YOUNG UKRAINIAN LAWYERS AFFECTED BY RUSSIAN AGRESSION
Just recently our colleagues from Ukrainian Arbitration Association launched an initiative . This initiative is aimed at supporting Ukrainian arbitration practitioners affected by the russian aggression against Ukraine by publicly sharing their respective profiles and, thus, increasing their chances to be appointed as arbitrators, counsel, experts or involved in other roles in international arbitral proceedings and related cross-border litigations.
Taking the inspiration from that initiative, which JAL greatly appreciates and fully supports, we decided to launch a similar initiative for Ukrainian law students and young legal practitioners whose career plans and aspirations were completely shattered by hedious and unprecented Russian agression against Ukraine.
In particular, we are going to regularly publish at our Facebook and LinkedIn platforms the profiles of respective students and practitioners with their unique stories and backgrounds to increase their visibility and strengthen their chances of getting a scholarship from a foreign university or an internship at a law firm abroad.
We truly believe that our young legal stars deserve a chance of continuing their career path in a safe place, so we could preserve a precious foundation of the Ukrainian legal market's future!
As a first step, we are going to collect your stories and develop your profiles. Therefore, if you are interested in your profile being shared, please take a look at and fill in the form following this link:
Once we develop a solid database of your profiles, we will start sharing them, and foreign universities and law firms will witness firsthand the strength and skills of a new generation of Ukrainian legal stars.
We look forward hearing your unique story and share it with the world! 💙💛

Dear all,
Junior Arbitration League was primarily conceived to ensure the support of young arbitration practitioners, so they could increase their visibility and strengthen their role at Ukrainian legal market.
However, the unprecedented military attack of Russian Federation against Ukraine has crushed immediate career plans and aspirations of these youngsters, entirely shifting their focus to something more important - defending their country.
We are genuinely inspired to witness the people from all across of Ukraine that we once saw at our events now being actively engaged into volunteering activities, providing the essential support and assistance to those in need, and even joining local defense units to protect their hometowns from foreign invaders.
Meanwhile, they are also forced to stay in the basements listening to the sound of missiles, rocket artillery and air strikes while hoping that none of those would end their lives. Just like you, they are used to doing legal research, writing submissions and arguing the case before the court, but are not used to live in the bomb shelters praying for our lives, volunteering or taking up arms to resist the occupants.
These students and young arbitration lawyers by their own example are now proving the point that Junior Arbitration League always tried to convey - regardless of one’s age and experience, you can make a difference. A difference that these people are currently making extends far beyond the legal market.
We now urge young arbitration and dispute resolution practitioners from all over the world united by such worldwide organizations of similar kind as Paris Baby Arbitration, London Very Young Arbitration Practitioners, Paris Very Young Arbitration Practitioners, YAR - Young Arbitration Review, Young ICCA and many others to take the example of brave Ukrainian students and practitioners and join them in defending the security of not only Ukraine, but the whole world.
We believe that the legal community has no boundaries and is bound by the common principles, including the principle of solidarity.
In light of the foregoing, we hereby refer to you as representatives of the young generation of dispute resolution practitioners, as Ukrainians and as citizens of the world to do whatever you can to support Ukraine in these very dark times.
We kindly ask you to:
1) make an official statement which would condemn Russian aggression and express support for the Ukrainian people.
2) re-consider your cooperation with Russian state and private establishments (if there is any) and temporarily cease such cooperation.
3) spread the awareness among your respective communities about this war.
4) organize fundraising or donate for the needs of Ukrainian people. The full list of official and reliable donation platforms are available here: https://www.defendukraine.org/donate
