Naantali (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈnɑːntɑli]; Swedish: Nådendal) is a town in southwestern Finland, and, as a resort town during the summer, an important tourist centre of the country.[7][8][9] The municipality has a population of 19,579 (31 December 2021),[3] and is located in the region of Southwest Finland, 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) west of Turku.

The town has a land area of 311.50 square kilometres (120.27 sq mi).[2] Most of this area is located on the islands, but the majority of the population lives on the mainland[citation needed]. Most of the islands are covered with forest and farmland, while the mainland consists chiefly of residential areas[citation needed].
History
One of the oldest towns in Finland, Naantali was founded around the medieval Brigittine convent Vallis gratiae (or Nådendal Abbey), the church of which still dominates its skyline. The charter was signed by King Christopher of Sweden, the then ruler of Finland, in 1443. The convent got trading rights and other privileges, and the town around it began to grow. It also became an important destination for pilgrimage.

In the 16th century, as Catholicism gave way to Protestantism as the official religion of Finland, the convent was closed, and the town plunged into a depression. This lasted until the mid-18th century, when the town got a tollgate and a customs chamber. In the two centuries of economic stagnation before that the town had become famous for its knitted stockings, a craft carried on from the times of the convent.

The year 1863 saw the founding of the spa at Cape Kalevanniemi, which raised the town's status as a holiday venue. In 1922, the Kultaranta estate on Luonnonmaa was made the official summer residence for the President of the Republic, after Finland had gained its independence five years earlier.

The municipalities of Merimasku, Rymättylä and Velkua were consolidated with Naantali on January 1, 2009.

The per capita tax income of the town is the second highest of all towns in Finland, and the highest in the province of Southwest Finland.

Imatra
is a town and municipality in eastern Finland. Imatra is dominated by Lake Saimaa, the Vuoksi River and the border with Russia. On the other side of the border, 7 kilometres (4 mi) away from the centre of Imatra, lies the Russian town of Svetogorsk. St Petersburg is situated 210 km (130 mi) to the southeast, Finland's capital Helsinki is 230 km (140 mi) away and Lappeenranta, the nearest Finnish town, is 37 km (23 mi) away. Imatra belongs to the administrative province of Southern Finland and the region of South Karelia.

The main employers are pulp and paper manufacturer Stora Enso Oyj, the Town of Imatra, engineering steel manufacturer Ovako Bar Oy Ab, and the Finnish Border Guard. As of October 2003, the total number of employees was 12,423.[6] As of December 2004, 1,868 employees were employed by the Town of Imatra. The town manager of Imatra is Ari Lindeman. The town's nicknames include Imis, Ibiza and Nahkalippis City (Leather Baseball Cap City).

The name of Imatra comes possibly from a Pre-Finno-Ugric substrate language.[7] The lightning symbols on Imatra's coat of arms refer to the power plants that were started to be built in the early 1920s in both Tainionskoski and Imatrankoski rapids. The coat of arms was designed by Olof Eriksson, and the Imatra town council approved it on August 9, 1950. The Ministry of the Interior approved the coat of arms for use on October 25 of the same year.[8][9]
History
An Art Nouveau or Jugend style castle, currently known as Imatran Valtionhotelli, was built near the rapids in 1903 as a hotel for tourists from the Russian Imperial capital Saint Petersburg.

During the Continuation War, Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim met with Adolf Hi**er in secrecy near the town for the former's 75th birthday.

Imatra was founded in 1948 on the territory of three municipalities – Jääski, Ruokolahti and Joutseno. Finland ceded 9% of its territory to the Soviet Union after the Winter War. Jääski lost 85% of its territory and it was decided that a new municipality, Imatra, should be established on the remaining 15% of Jääski and some areas of Ruokolahti and Joutseno. This is why the Imatra coat of arms has three flashes – in honour of those previous municipalities that granted areas to it. It gained its municipal charter in 1971.

Sport
PaSa Bandy is a bandy club in Imatra.

Imatra is the birthplace of National Hockey League players Jussi Markkanen and Petteri Nokelainen.

In motorsport history, Imatra is best known for its road races (former TT-race) from 1963 to 1986. From 1962 to 1982 it was the home of the Finnish motorcycle Grand Prix. Racing on the Imatra road circuit ended after fatal accident during the 1986 European Championship event.[10] Racing resumed in 2016 as an International Road Racing Championship event.

There is an annual indoor rowing race at Imatra, which attracts competitors from across Finland.[11]

Facts About Tampere
Tampere is a city in Pirkanmaa, southern Finland. It is the most populous inland city in the Nordic countries.

In 2007, Tampere switched to a new model of government. Since then, a mayor and four deputy mayors have been chosen for a period of two years by the city council. The mayor also becomes the seat of the city council for the duration of the tenure.
Tampere has two additional “friendship cities”: León, Nicaragua & Mwanza, Tanzania.
Tampere is twinned with:Brașov, Romania; Chemnitz, Germany; Essen, Germany; Kaunas, Lithuania; Kiev, Ukraine; Klaksvík, Faroe Islands; Kópavogur, Iceland; Linz, Austria; Łódź, Poland; Miskolc, Hungary; Nizhny Novgorod, Russia; Norrköping, Sweden; Odense, Denmark; Olomouc, Czech Republic; Syracuse, United States; Tartu, Estonia; Trondheim, Norway & Guangzhou, China.
Finland’s largest glass sculpture, owned by the City of Tampere, “Pack Ice / The Mirror of the Sea” by the renowned artist Timo Sarpaneva, was installed in the entrance lobby of the downtown shopping mall KoskiKeskus until it was moved to a warehouse.
Tampere is also home to one of the last museums in the world dedicated to Vladimir Lenin.
Tampere ostensibly has a long-standing mutual feud with the city of Turku, the first capital of Finland. This hostility is largely expressed in-jokes in one city about the other; prominent targets are the traditional Tampere food, mustamakkara, the state of the Aura River in Turku, and the regional accents.
Three of these institutions, TUT, UTA, and TAMK are merging into a new Tampere University at the beginning of 2019.
