★ Making, accepting, and refusing offers

#англійська #репетитор #вчитель #онлайн #офлайн #коломия

• To make offers, we can say:

✔️ You can use my phone.
✔️ Would you like a cup of coffee?
✔️ Would you like me to open a window?

• To accept offers, we can say:

✔️ Great, thanks. (for smaller offers).
✔️ That's very/really nice of you, thanks. (for bigger offers).
✔️ That would be great. (for bigger offers).

• To refuse offers, we can say:

✔️ That's all right, thanks. (for smaller offers)
✔️ That's OK, I can just... (for smaller offers)
✔️ That's very/really nice of you, thanks. But... (for bigger offers).

★ Disagreeing

#англійська #репетитор #вчитель #онлайн #офлайн #коломия

• If you disagree with someone, the topic, situation, and your relationship with the person influence how you choose to disagree.

• For differences of opinion about a serious topic or a disagreement with your boss, you may try to avoid disagreement by being less direct. Being less direct often means using sentences that are more complex to avoid saying that you disagree directly or suggesting that you are unsure about your position.

✔️ I'm not sure if I agree.
✔️ Have you thought about...?

• For simple topics or with someone you know well, you can be more direct by saying that you disagree and using shorter sentences. In those situations, it's common to say ✔️ Really? to show you disagree.

• In either case, try to show that you understand the other person's opinion before you disagree.

★ Giving, accepting, and rejecting advice

#англійська #репетитор #вчитель #онлайн #офлайн #коломия

• There are various ways to give advice. If you know a lot about a topic, you can use ✔️ should. It's helpful to say why your advice is good.

A: ✔️ How should I get downtown?
B: ✔️ You should take the subway. That's the fastest and cheapest way to get there.

• If your advice is one of several options, it is better not to use should. Instead, just give a reason that your idea is good.

A: ✔️ Where should I go for spring break?
B: ✔️ Well, Mexico has great beaches.

• To accept advice, you can say:

✔️ That sounds good.
✔️ That's a great idea!
✔️ Maybe I'll do that / go there / try that.

• When you reject advice, give a reason. Don't say directly that you don't like the advice. Use an indirect rejection with a reason.

A: ✔️ Well, Mexico has great beaches.
B: × Going to Mexico is a bad idea.
✔️ Well, I don't speak Spanish very well.
B: × I don't like that advice.
✔️ That's a great idea, but I can't afford that right now.

★ Getting clarification

#англійська #репетитор #вчитель #онлайн #офлайн #коломия

• When you are listening to someone, you can show you understand by saying things like ✔️ I see, ✔️ Got it!, ✔️ OK, and ✔️ Uh-huh.

• When you don't hear or understand something, you can let the other person know you need clarification. The language you use can depend on the amount of clarification you need and the situation.

• For example, shorter and more direct expressions like ✔️ What? or ✔️ Huh? can be used when you need a simple clarification.

• When you need a bigger explanation or are with people you don't know well, you need to ask in a less direct and more polite way. You can use longer expressions like, ✔️ Could you go over that again, please?

• Adding ✔️ please and ✔️ sorry makes your question more polite and respectful:

✔️ I'm sorry, but would you mind explaining that?
✔️ Do you think you could say that again, please?

★ Giving and accepting compliments

#англійська #репетитор #вчитель #онлайн #офлайн #коломия

• To give a compliment in English, you can use simple expressions such as ✔️ I really like that sweater or ✔️ I love your shoes.

• The most common adjectives people use when giving a compliment are ✔️ nice, ✔️ good, ✔️ beautiful, ✔️ pretty, and ✔️ great. You can add ✔️ really or ✔️ very to most compliments. Really is more informal than very.

• Remember that not all compliments are suitable for everyone. For example, you might say ✔️ Your hair looks nice to a friend but not your employer.

• It is common to accept a compliment in English. You can say ☑ thank you and give more information or ask a question in most situations.

• Giving more information develops the conversation.

A: ✔️ I really like your sweater!
B: ✔️ Oh, thanks. My sister gave it to me.

• Asking a question encourages the person giving the compliment to explain their reasons.

A: ✔️ That's a great hat.
B: ✔️ Really?
A: ✔️ Yeah, it really goes well with your shirt.

• You can also compliment the other person.

A: ✔️ I like your shoes.
B: ✔️ Thanks. Yours look nice, too!

★ Asking for and giving opinions

#англійська #репетитор #вчитель #онлайн #офлайн #коломия

• If you want to get someone's opinion, you can ask:

✔️ What do you think about/of...?
✔️ What's your opinion about/of...?
✔️ How do you feel about...?
✔️ Do you like...?
✔️ In your opinion,...?

• When you have a negative opinion about something but you don't want to seem rude or to make someone feel bad, you can make your opinion softer. Compare the two sets of expressions below.

• Very honest

✔️ I don't like it.
✔️ I hate it!
✔️ I think it's boring.
✔️ I don't understand why it's popular.

• Honest bit softer

✔️ It's different, but it's not really my style.
✔️ It's OK, but to be honest, it's not my favourite.
✔️ In my opinion, / For me, / I think _ is more interesting.
✔️ I know it's very popular, but I like _ more.

★ Requesting by phone

#англійська #репетитор #вчитель #онлайн #офлайн #коломия

• There are many ways to ask for something. When we feel confident and we don't think we're asking for too much, we use polite, direct phrases:

✔️ I'd like to (meet with you).
✔️ Could you (tell me what your office hours are), please?
✔️ Do you have time to...?

• If we're worried that our request is not convenient for the other person, we use less direct phrases:

✔️ I'm wondering if you could (bring me my book).
✔️ Would you mind (giving me a ride home)?
✔️ Is it possible for you/me to...?

• Sometimes we add an extra phrase to show that we know we are asking a lot:

✔️ Can I ask you a favour?
✔️ Sorry to bother you...
✔️ ...if you have time/if possible.

• It helps to add an explanation, so the person understands your situation.

✔️ My car broke down. Could you give me a ride?

• If the person says yes, thank them. If they say no, it's good to make sure they don't feel bad about it.

• Request accepted

A: ✔️ Could I borrow your car today?
B: ✔️ Sure, no problem.
A: ✔️ Great! Thank you so much!

• Request rejected

A: ✔️ Do you have time to pick me up at the train station?
B: ✔️ I'm sorry, I don't. I'm visiting my grandmother.
A: ✔️ Oh, that's OK. Thanks anyway!

★ Giving encouragement

#англійська #репетитор #вчитель #онлайн #офлайн #коломия

• In English, we have different ways to give encouragement. For example, when someone is a little worried, we might say:

✔️ There's nothing to worry about.
✔️ It'll be great.
✔️ Don't worry.
✔️ Good luck!

• When someone is very worried, we might encourage the person by adding something about the person's past experiences.
For example, we might say:

✔️ You always do well.
✔️ You did really well last year

• People respond to encouragement in different ways. They might just say, ✔️ "Thank you" or ✔️ "Thanks".

They might also express doubt like this: ✔️ Do you really think so? ✔️ Are you sure? ✔️ Really?
