From July to November, under the influence of rains, the water level gradually rises and the low southwestern coast is widely flooded almost to K*k. The lake is very shallow over a large area; the western part near Ngorn and Maduari is characterized by great depth. The maximum depth in the rainy season is 11 meters. The shores are mostly marshy; to the northeast, the terrain has a steppe character, and only the southern coast is characterized by abundant tropical vegetation.

In the very rainy season (which happens extremely rarely), with extraordinarily high water levels, a temporary surface runoff of the lake is formed in the northeast (along the dry channel of Bahr-el-Ghazal). The dark-colored, dirty water of the lake is overgrown with thick algae in places.

In the 19th century the first information about the lake appeared in English travelers Hugh Clapperton, Dixon Denham[en] and Walter Odney (1823); Adolf Overweg traveled (1851) around the lake to a group of islets. Heinrich Barth (1852) and Gustav Nachtigall (1870-1872) explored the lake more fully.

The lake itself was known even to the Alexandrian astronomer Ptolemy under the name of the Nuba swamp, which "appears periodically". Abu-el-Fida also mentions Lake Chad under the name of Lake Kuar.
