The 5th All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference “Adaptation to Global Changes and Challenges: Resource-Efficient Technologies and Environmental Protection”🌱 took place at Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas.
The conference served as an important platform for discussing contemporary environmental, technological and resource-related challenges facing Ukraine and the world today. The participants focused on resource-efficient technologies, environmental safety, environmental protection, the rational use of natural resources, as well as scientific approaches that may be useful for Ukraine’s post-war recovery.
Representatives of Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University took part in the conference: Professor Volodymyr Kotsiubynskyi, Head of the Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science, and Professor Volodymyra Boichuk from the same department. They presented a report on the use of resources in space🪐 and the prospects of In-Situ Resource Utilisation technologies - an approach that involves using local resources from the Moon🌑, Mars or other celestial bodies to support future missions.
The participation of representatives of Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University took place within the framework of the SPACE READY project, particularly with the aim of disseminating information about modern approaches to preparing students and young researchers for participation in analogue space missions👩‍🚀, developing interdisciplinary education in the field of space technologies, and promoting the topic of using local resources in future space missions.
The presentation emphasised that research into space resources is not detached from terrestrial challenges. On the contrary, closed-loop technologies, waste recycling♻️, and the production of water💧, oxygen💨, energy🔌 and construction materials from local raw materials are directly linked to the principles of resource efficiency, sustainable development and environmental safety. Such approaches may be useful not only for future lunar or Martian bases, but also for developing solutions relevant to communities, critical infrastructure and the recovery of Ukraine.
Special attention was paid to the interdisciplinary nature of such research: today, space technologies combine materials science, chemistry, energy, ecology, biotechnology, engineering and digital solutions. For students and young researchers, this opens up new opportunities to participate in international educational and research initiatives, particularly in areas related to analogue space missions, the training of future specialists for the space sector, and the development of European🇪🇺 scientific cooperation🛰.

Within the framework of the international educational project SPACE_READY — Digital Course for University Analog Astronauts Space Trainings (https://spaceready.eu/), implemented with the support of the Erasmus+ KA220-HED programme, students of Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University have begun taking part in the first of a planned series of pilot analogue space missions 🚀

Representing Carpathian University are Master’s students of the Faculty of Physics and Technology, Iryna Kamin and Liubov Babinchuk. They have joined an international team of students undergoing scientific and educational training in conditions closely resembling the scenarios of crew work during future space missions 🌑

The analogue missions are taking place at the Analog Astronaut Training Center (AATC) habitat in Poland🇵🇱, near Kraków, in the Rzepiennik region. This is a specialised infrastructure designed to simulate conditions of isolation, team interaction, the performance of scientific experiments, work with equipment🧪, and communication📡 with the Mission Control Centre. Such missions enable students not only to gain new knowledge about space research, but also to test their own skills in conditions of limited resources, strict regulations, team responsibility, and interdisciplinary cooperation.

Students from the project’s partner universities are also involved in the analogue missions: AGH University of Krakow (Poland🇵🇱), Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (France🇫🇷), Poliarte Politecnico delle arti (Italy🇮🇹), and Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University (Ukraine🇺🇦). This format brings together young people from different European educational environments around a shared theme: preparation for future space research, the development of STEM education, digital learning tools, and practical training for analogue astronauts👩‍🚀

For Carpathian University, student participation in the SPACE_READY project is an important step in developing systematic cooperation with European partners in the fields of space education, materials science, digital learning, and research into extreme environments🛰 The project offers students the opportunity to work in international crews, carry out research tasks, adapt to an English-speaking professional environment, and gain experience that cannot be acquired solely in a classroom setting.

💥Analogue space missions are one of the practical stages of the SPACE_READY project. Their results will be used to test and improve the digital training course for candidates preparing for analogue space missions, the development of which has involved academic staff from the Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science of our university👨‍🚀

On 22 April 2026, as part of the implementation of project 101127143 – RISE-UP – ERASMUS-JMO-2023-HEI-TCH-RSCH under the Jean Monnet Module “Radiation Safety: A European-Ukrainian Approach”, a scientific and awareness-raising event entitled “Radiation, the Environment and Responsibility: Lessons from Chornobyl”☢️ was held. The participants of the event included students and academic staff of the Faculty of Physics and Technology of Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University.

The presentation was delivered by Volodymyra Boichuk, Professor at the Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science. The meeting focused on reflecting on the significance of the Chornobyl disaster for contemporary society, science, environmental policy and the system of specialist training. In the context of the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident, it is particularly important not only to honour the memory of one of the largest man-made disasters of the twentieth century, but also to develop a deep understanding of its lessons for the present and the future.

During the event, emphasis was placed on the fact that Chornobyl became not only a tragedy that changed the lives of millions of people and caused large-scale environmental damage, but also a powerful signal of the need to develop a strong culture of safety in the use of nuclear technologies. The consequences of the accident clearly demonstrated that radiation safety issues go far beyond purely technical matters and encompass environmental, biomedical, social, legal and ethical dimensions.

Particular attention was paid to the importance of disseminating knowledge about the nature of ionising radiation, the principles of radiation protection, risk assessment, and the impact of radiation on humans and the environment. In today’s conditions, such knowledge is necessary not only for narrow specialists but also for a broad range of students, academic staff and the public, as it fosters a responsible attitude towards safety issues, helps counter disinformation and contributes to the development of a well-grounded civic position.

This event fully corresponds to the aim of the RISE-UP project, which is focused on implementing a European-Ukrainian approach🇪🇺🇺🇦 to education in radiation safety, developing interdisciplinary competences and preparing students to work with the complex challenges of the modern world. Combining physical and technical⚛️, biomedical🧬 and regulatory⚖️ dimensions makes it possible to consider radiation safety holistically - as a field in which knowledge, responsibility and public awareness are equally important.

As part of the implementation of project 101127143 – RISE-UP – ERASMUS-JMO-2023-HEI-TCH-RSCH under the Jean Monnet Module “Radiation Safety: A European-Ukrainian Approach” ☢️, which is being carried out at the Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science, a scientific and educational event entitled “Legal Aspects of Radiation Safety in the Context of the Current State of Nuclear Energy in Ukraine” was held on 22 April 2026.

The venue for the event was the Law Institute of Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, which was symbolic given the interdisciplinary nature of the project, combining physical and technical, biomedical, and regulatory and legal areas of training in the field of radiation safety.

The presentation was delivered by Nadiia Kobetska, a member of the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine, Doctor of Law, Professor at Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, and a specialist in legal mechanisms for environmental protection and the protection of citizens’ environmental rights ⚖️. During the event, emphasis was placed on the fact that issues of radiation safety are becoming particularly relevant today in the context of the current challenges facing Ukraine.

The functioning of nuclear energy, the need to ensure the country’s energy resilience, risks associated with military threats to nuclear infrastructure, and public demand for reliable information and legal certainty in this area require a new quality of specialist training and new approaches to shaping a culture of safety.

Special attention during the presentation was given to the importance of introducing European approaches to the legal aspects of working with nuclear technologies and sources of ionising radiation.

This concerns not only the harmonisation of Ukrainian legislation with the norms and standards of the European Union🇪🇺, but also the development of modern legal thinking in which the use of nuclear energy is viewed through the lens of human safety, environmental protection, institutional responsibility, transparency in management decisions and compliance with international obligations.

This fully corresponds to the objectives of the RISE-UP project, which include promoting EU policies in the physical and technical, medical and biological, and legal fields regarding the appropriate use of “green” 🌱 nuclear energy in the current geopolitical context, improving the quality of professional training according to EU standards, and developing systematic multidisciplinary competences in radiation safety among students and stakeholders.

The event once again confirmed that radiation safety is not merely a technical or medical issue, but a complex social, educational and legal category. In this context, particular importance is attached to the training of specialists capable of working at the intersection of natural sciences, medicine, law and public administration, as well as to the formation of an objective civic position on the use of nuclear energy.

The implementation of such events within the RISE-UP project contributes to the development of a culture of responsible engagement with nuclear energy issues, the dissemination of European values in the field of safety, and the strengthening of the interdisciplinary educational space of Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University.

The team of project 101127143 – RISE-UP – ERASMUS-JMO-2023-HEI-TCH-RSCH under the Jean Monnet Module “Radiation Safety: A European-Ukrainian Approach” held an information and awareness-raising event entitled “Invisible Threat: the Chornobyl Legacy and Modern Research on Cosmic Radiation” ☢️

Presentations were delivered by Volodymyr Kotsiubynskyi, Head of the Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science at Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, and Professor Volodymyra Boichuk from the same department. The target audience of the event consisted of around 100 cadets of the University’s Department of Military Training 🪖

The Department of Military Training provides training for reserve officers, organises and conducts scientific and technical, innovative and methodological activities, and carries out military-patriotic education. For this reason, knowledge about the nature of ionising radiation, sources of radiation hazards, principles of radiation protection and risk assessment is of not only educational but also practical importance for future officers.

During the event, the Chornobyl disaster was considered as one of the key historical examples of the large-scale consequences that can result from neglecting nuclear and radiation safety. Particular attention was paid to the fact that the Chornobyl legacy remains an important source of lessons for science, civil protection systems, public administration and the training of specialists capable of acting under conditions of potential radiation threats💥

At the same time, the presentation highlighted modern research on cosmic radiation, expanding the understanding of radiation safety as a multidimensional field of knowledge relevant not only to nuclear energy or medicine, but also to defence training, aerospace research, strategic planning and the assessment of the impact of extreme factors on humans and technical systems🚀

In this way, the historical experience of Chornobyl can be linked with the latest scientific fields, demonstrating that radiation is an invisible but real risk factor that requires a high level of knowledge, discipline and responsibility.

For cadets of the Department of Military Training, knowledge of radiation safety is particularly valuable, as it helps develop readiness to make well-grounded decisions in non-standard and potentially dangerous conditions, strengthens threat assessment skills, improves the culture of safety and fosters awareness of responsibility for protecting people, the environment and critical infrastructure.

As part of the expansion of cooperation with the NGO SaveDnipro and the implementation of project 101127143 – RISE-UP – ERASMUS-JMO-2023-HEI-TCH-RSCH under the Jean Monnet Module “Radiation Safety: A European-Ukrainian Approach”, a Radnote radiation monitoring station was installed on the premises of Dolyna Lyceum No. 4 of Dolyna City Council, Ivano-Frankivsk Region.

This initiative was supported by Volodymyr Kotsiubynskyi, Head of the Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science at Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, and Professor Volodymyra Boichuk.

The SaveDnipro public radiation monitoring project is being implemented jointly with the international partners Safecast and Blues Inc. Radnote stations are autonomous devices that do not require a local internet connection or an external power source and transmit real-time radiation background data to the SaveEcoBot system ☢️

As of the end of 2025, SaveDnipro had already installed and put into operation 65 stations of this type across Ukraine within the project, and the network itself has become an important tool for providing citizens with rapid access to public environmental data. We sincerely thank the Director of the Lyceum, Mykola Zankovych, and physics teacher Iryna Voloshchuk for their openness to cooperation and assistance in installing the station.

Thanks to such local partnerships, modern environmental monitoring tools are becoming accessible not only to specialists but also to the school community, helping pupils and teachers understand that modern environmental monitoring is based on open data, continuous observation technologies, and a responsible attitude towards information about the state of the environment 🌱

Cooperation between the university, a non-governmental organisation, an international monitoring network and a secondary education institution is a clear example of how citizens, educators and researchers can jointly contribute to the creation of socially useful open data infrastructure 🔐

Safecast positions itself as a global network for collecting and sharing environmental data, primarily on radiation background levels, and makes all collected data openly available for free use. This forms the basis of citizen science as an approach that brings together science, education and a responsible society.
