According to the old Polish spelling - Warszewa or Warszowa, it means "belongs to Warsaw". Folk etymology describes the origin of the name of the city from the name of the fisherman Wars and his wife Sawa.[13] In fact, Varsch was a nobleman in the 12th/13th centuries who owned a village located in the neighborhood of modern Marienstadt.[14]

The first settlements on the territory of modern Warsaw date back to the 10th century. At the beginning of the 15th and 16th centuries, it was the capital of the Principality of Mazowiecki, in the 16th and early 19th centuries, of all Poland, in 1807–13, of the Principality of Warsaw, and from 1815, of the Kingdom of Poland (part of the Russian Empire). After heavy destruction during the Second World War, the following were restored: the Old Town, the royal castle of the 16th and 17th centuries, many churches, palaces and parks; marshalkovskaya street ensemble (1960s). The historic center of Warsaw belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
