After the end of the Thirty Years' War, under the Treaty of Westphalia, Bremen ceded to Sweden much of its territory in the lowlands of the Weser. In 1810, Napoleon I declared Bremen the capital of the French department of Lippe. In 1813 the city was occupied by the Allies and at the Congress of Vienna Bremen was recognized as a free city of the German Union. Under the Treaty of 1856, special customs rules were established for Bremen, and in 1888 the city became part of the German Customs Union. In 1866, Bremen's troops took part in the hostilities of the Prussian army, and after the formation of the German Empire, Bremen became part of it as an independent free city with its own system of self-government.

The prosperity of Bremen began in 845, during the reign of Archbishop Adalbert. In 859 the city was looted by Rurik of Jutland. In 1032 the first city walls were erected. In 1260 Bremen joined the Hanseatic League. Rapid economic development allowed Bremen to get out of the power of the archbishop and become a free city. The statues of Roland (1404) and the town hall (1409) were erected on the main square as symbols of independence.
