At the Academy 59 departments work.Among staff at Dnipropetrovsk State Medical University (DSMU) there are 646 teachers, among them 98 doktors of Medical Sciences and 359 candidates of Medical Sciences. In total, the Academy employs over 1100 employees. Among the teachers: 1 - Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, 1 corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 2, Corresponding Member of Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, 4 employees were awarded prizes of the President of Ukraine, 5 distinguished workers in higher education and public education, 9 Honoured Scientists of Science and Technology, 9 State Prize winners of Ukraine and Russia, 5 Honored doctors of Ukraine, 24 full members and corresponding members of many national and foreign academies, members of international scientific societies and associations. Dnipropetrovsk State Medical University (DSMU) has 42 clinical departments which are located in 28 hospitals and having over 15 thousand beds. On clinical bases Academy organized 29 specialized centers. The Dnipropetrovsk State Medical University (DSMU) occupies an area of 85 hectares. Academy has 8 academic buildings with total area of 52000 square meters, which are located 608 classrooms, offices and laboratories. 7 dormitories area is 46000 sq.m. 2849 students and resident doctors under training. The Dnipropetrovsk State Medical University (DSMU) has a sports complex, vivarium, a sanatorium, sports camp, academic library, Technocenter and two museums.

On May 20–21, 2026, with the support of the WHO Office in Ukraine, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU), and with financial support from the European Union and Switzerland, the III National Conference on Primary Healthcare (PHC) was held in Kyiv.

The conference brought together more than 500 participants, including healthcare institution managers, family physicians, nurses, international experts, and representatives of higher medical educational institutions.

The event focused on discussing current challenges, strategic directions for development, and strengthening the role of primary healthcare within the ongoing transformation of Ukraine’s healthcare system. During panel discussions, particular attention was paid to the financing of PHC, workforce capacity, quality of healthcare services, development of healthcare networks, and the attraction of strategic investments into the sector.

Such events serve as an important platform for professional dialogue, exchange of experience, and the development of joint solutions aimed at strengthening the primary healthcare system and ensuring high-quality medical services for the population of Ukraine.

Despite all modern challenges, the transformation of primary healthcare continues. Dnipro State Medical University keeps pace with these changes to provide students with up-to-date knowledge that meets the real needs of the modern healthcare system.

DSMU Educational Initiatives Supported by WHO — A Confident Step Toward the Development of Primary Healthcare

At the Department of Family Medicine, Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine, and Laboratory Diagnostics of Dnipro State Medical University, three thematic advanced training courses for primary healthcare physicians were conducted in April and May 2026 with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The implementation of such educational programmes is an important step toward introducing modern evidence-based approaches and strengthening the capacity of the primary healthcare system in Ukraine. Dnipro State Medical University serves as one of the centres for the development of training platforms and educational hubs for primary care physicians, while the implementation of joint educational initiatives with WHO is an important element of the ongoing transformation of Ukraine’s healthcare system.

Two of the training programmes focused on the topic: “Practical Use of Standardized Regulatory Material and Technical Equipment for Primary Healthcare Providers in Compliance with Infection Control Requirements.” Another course, “Implementation of Modern Standards for the Management of Arterial Hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes. WHO PEN Tool,” helped participants improve their skills in managing patients with these conditions according to WHO methodologies.

On May 12, 2026, an art therapy training session aimed at strengthening psychological resilience was held for first-year students. The session was conducted by Svitlana Pavlenko, Head of the Laboratory of Psychophysiological Relief. Such events are regularly organized at DSMU within the framework of the nationwide mental health programme “How Are You?”, which is focused on developing a culture of mental well-being and self-care.

The central activity of the meeting was the creative exercise “Free Colour,” during which participants used selected colour palettes to express their inner emotional state and mood. This approach helped future medical professionals effectively reduce psychological tension, relieve accumulated stress, and shift their focus toward positive thinking, which is especially important during periods of intensive study. Throughout the session and the reflection activities, students were able to harmonize their emotional state, feel the support of their peers, and spend meaningful time together.

Thanks to the active implementation of the National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Environment in Ukraine, significant attention is being paid at the university to the development of an inclusive educational environment where everyone feels involved, supported, and protected. For this purpose, the university has created modern accessible spaces that meet the requirements of both physical and social inclusivity. The training session was held in one of these comfortable and welcoming spaces, ensuring a cozy atmosphere and free access to all the necessary resources for creativity and relaxation.

At the end of April, the Congress of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, ESCMID Global 2026, took place in Munich, bringing together researchers, physicians, and public health specialists. The programme focused on emerging threats, particularly the development of antimicrobial resistance, as well as the implementation of modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods into clinical practice, the development of new vaccines, and other large-scale challenges.

This year, Professor Kateryna Lytvyn, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at our university, was invited to deliver an oral presentation at the Forum. Her presentation, “Rabies in the Dnipropetrovsk Region (Ukraine) during the war,” was delivered during a session of the Study Group for Infectious Diseases of the Brain (ESGIB), held within the congress at the historic hall of St. Vincent House of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

A poster presentation and publication from Dnipro State Medical University entitled “Actinomycosis of the Maxillary Sinus: A Case Report” was also presented. This clinical report was the result of interdisciplinary collaboration involving representatives of the Department of Infectious Diseases of DSMU: Professors Kateryna Lytvyn and Viktor Mavrutenkov, Assistant Oleksandr Bilokon, intern Maksym Hromov, and young scientist and assistant of the Department of Pathological Anatomy, Forensic Medicine, and Pathological Physiology Olha Usova.

It should be noted that interdisciplinary interaction, namely the involvement of infectious disease specialists, microbiologists, epidemiologists, public health experts, and representatives of other medical specialties, is an important aspect of ESCMID Global 2026. Thematic sessions and discussions provide access to the most up-to-date scientific data, which in turn shape modern approaches to the treatment of infectious diseases. The world of science is dynamic: every achievement only highlights the depth of new questions that still require further research.

Inter-departmental collaboration at the 26th Scientific Conference for Students and Young Researchers

On 26 March 2026, as part of the 26th Scientific Conference of Students and Young Scientists, a joint meeting was held between the student scientific societies of the departments of Pathological Anatomy, Forensic Medicine and Pathological Physiology, as well as Family Medicine, Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine and Laboratory Diagnostics.
During the single-theme session, a wide range of environmentally-induced and nutrition-related diseases was discussed, which today pose a significant challenge to the healthcare system. The focus was on pathologies associated with both the influence of the occupational and domestic environment and nutritional disorders. It was emphasised that these conditions are among the leading causes of disability and place a significant socio-economic burden on the world.

During the session, the students presented eight papers, demonstrating a high level of preparation and scientific thinking.

The 26th Scientific Conference of Students and Young Scientists continues its work, promoting the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, and the development of clinical thinking and scientific communication skills.

DDMU’s participation in the 34th European Psychiatric Association Congress (EPA 2026)

At the end of March 2026, the 34th European Psychiatric Association (EPA) Congress 2026 took place in Prague, bringing together mental health professionals, researchers, policymakers and activists from across Europe and other parts of the world. Held under the slogan ‘Mental Health: Improving Care and Expanding Horizons’, the congress addressed the urgent need to expand access to high-quality mental health services for all people, regardless of their circumstances or background.

Professor Viktoria Ogorenko, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine and Medical Psychology at Dnipro State Medical University, took part in the Congress.

The EPA 2026 Congress served as an important platform for exchanging clinical experience, discussing modern approaches to the prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, as well as the advancement of research in the field of mental health. Participation in such international events helps to promote the university’s scientific achievements at an international level, expand professional networks and opens up new opportunities for further cooperation in the field of mental health.

Lecturers from Dnipro State Medical University took part in a SAMS training course on psychological support

Lecturers from Dnipro State Medical University took part in the training course ‘Psychological First Aid (PFA) for Healthcare Professionals’, which was organised with the support of the Syrian-American Medical Society (SAMS) in Ukraine.

Fifteen lecturers from the departments of disaster and military medicine, anaesthesiology, intensive care and emergency medicine at the Faculty of Postgraduate Education, as well as the Department of Family Medicine, took part in the training.

SAMS began its activities in Ukraine in 2022 in response to the Russian invasion.
The aim of the training was to enhance the competence of healthcare professionals in providing first psychological aid to patients, their relatives and colleagues, as well as to strengthen skills in self-regulation and the prevention of emotional burnout under conditions of high professional stress.

DSMU continues its work on the 4P-CAN international project

On 23–24 March 2026, the third annual reporting conference of the international 4P-CAN project took place in Lyon (France). The event was dedicated to summarising the work carried out and discussing further development steps, given that this is the project’s final year.

During the conference, participants presented key findings. In particular, the team from Dnipro State Medical University took part in preparing and presenting a report on the impact of war on environmental pollution and the epidemiology of cancer. Particular attention was paid to the results of a study involving focus groups in Portugal, Romania and Ukraine, which revealed both common and differing approaches to cancer prevention across the participating countries.

DSMU continues to actively develop international scientific initiatives, in particular the 4P-CAN project supported by the European Horizon Europe programme, which are aimed at developing the public health system and implementing effective disease prevention strategies.

Specialists from Dnipro State Medical University at the ‘Sukharevsky Readings 2026’ Congress of Vascular Surgeons

On 19–21 March 2026, the Congress of Vascular Surgeons, Phlebologists and Angiologists of Ukraine took place in Lviv. This event serves as the main platform for the Ukrainian Vascular Society (UVS) to exchange expertise, where specialists discuss current issues in the treatment of arterial and venous diseases. It has become an important platform for discussing the most pressing challenges of modern medicine.

Staff from Dnipropetrovsk State Medical University (DSMU) played an active role in the forum, helping to organise the event, presenting scientific papers, and participating in the moderation of sessions and professional discussions.

Participation in events of this calibre contributes to the active integration of Dnipropetrovsk State Medical University into the modern scientific and educational landscape, promotes the implementation of advanced medical practices, and opens up new opportunities for the professional development of lecturers and students.

Donor Day was held at Dnipro State Medical University
On 13 March, Donor Day was held at Dnipro State Medical University — an important charitable initiative aimed at supporting the military and those affected by the hostilities.
A total of 98 participants took part in the blood donation drive, including students, lecturers and junior doctors.
Around 35 litres of whole blood were collected, which will be used to help military personnel and civilians affected by the war.
Donor Day at Dnipro Medical University once again demonstrated the high level of civic awareness within the university community and the willingness of medical professionals to help those in need. Every donation is a chance at life, and our joint efforts can save dozens of lives.
The university administration sincerely thanks all the donors at the event for their active involvement, compassion and contribution to the common cause of helping others.
