Beautiful Tkvarcheli

The railway bridge over the river Aaldzga in Tkvarcheli was the only bend in the USSR with a bend. The mountain river Aaldzga is better known as Galidzga, the Georgian name Galidzga was renamed to Abkhazian. The curved bridge is a symbol of Tkuarchal.

Many Russians lived in the city to help them. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations brought humanitarian aid by helicopter and evacuated the sick and children. During one such flight on December 14, 1992, to the city of Gudauta, the center of the Abkhaz resistance, the helicopter was fired upon and fell to the ground burning. This tragedy went down in history as Latskaya, after the name of the village where the helicopter crashed. More than 80 people died (there is no exact figure), including 35 children.
In total, during the blockade of Tkvarcheli, the Russian Ministry of Emergencies deported about 2,500 people.

Tkvarcheli was established in 1942 as a city of miners. Eight mines for coking coal were opened here.
Tkvarcheli was designed and built by the German tribes, so it looked like a European city. The upper and lower parts of the city are connected by a cable car, a forest and a ring road.
Higher in the mountains were mining visitors to Akarmari, Dzhantukha and Polyana, who became part of the town of Tkvarcheli. Now they are real ghost towns: destroyed and abandoned.

Tkuarchal is often called a ghost town or a "dead city", but this is not the case. 5 thousand live in the city. people, there are good roads, traffic lights, there is a school, shops, the roofs of houses have been repaired. However, most of the city is abandoned and destroyed.
