Lady's attire of the Tudor era: what noble women wore at the court of Henry VIII

It is believed that this style came to England with Anne Boleyn. She, who had arrived from France with Henry VIII's sister Mary Tudor, looked like a Frenchwoman. And although her wedding with the king took place only 10 years later, the style of the monarch's beloved was appreciated and adopted much earlier.
The dress consisted of several layers. First, they put on a body shirt, and over it - a quilted skirt called "petticoat". She created her signature Tudor silhouette. The skirt was worn underneath dress with a corset, called "kirtle". It served to tighten the waist and chest of the lady more feasibly, because curvaceous forms were not favored at that time. A luxurious outer dress was worn over the kirtl. He had ties in the front, and they were closed with a decorative element called "plakard".

Medieval hoods and their modifications

This headdress is called "chaperon" in French, or "thin" in English. Throughout the early Middle Ages, people passed here in such simple but practical hoods with mantles.

At the beginning of the 14th century, the design of the chaperone changed somewhat: the fashion came for two-tone clothes, sewn from 2 halves of a contrasting color, and the hood lengthened and "grew" a long tail, called a lyripipe. It could be wrapped around the neck, wrapped around the head, or tied in knots.
