In the historic center of the city coexist buildings erected in pre-Spanish times, such as the Grand Temple (el Templo Mayor) and modern, as Alameda (corredor Alameda), also in the colonial era: the National Palace (el Palacio Nacional), Palazzo Iturbide Palacio de Iturbide), the Catedral Metropolitana, the Palacio de Minería, etc.

Mexico City, as a municipality, was founded in 1521 by Cortés in the middle of the now drained Lake Texcoco on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire, and the smaller town of Tlatelolco. The municipality was disbanded in 1928 and the name "Mexico" is now used in two geographical names - the capital of Mexico and the name of a large populated area (there is also a state of Mexico, Estado de Mexico, but its name should use the word "state").

It is located in the Valle de México, a large valley on a high plateau (altiplano) in central Mexico, about 2,240 meters above sea level, surrounded on almost all sides by volcanoes that rise 4,000 to 5,500 meters above sea level.
