Bukovynian State Medical University
Chernivtsi medical college BSMU is one of the oldest educational institutions of Ukraine, founded in 1811 as obstetrics school. It was the period when Bukovyna was a part of Austro-Hungarian Empire. The high maternal and infant mortality was the ground for establishing the first secondary medical institution on the territory of Bu
kovyna. The obstetrics school was the first medical institution of Bukovyna which has become the centre of obstetrics development in the 19th - the beginning of the 20th century. The history of college comprises four periods:
•Austrian(1811-1919)
•Romanian(1919-1944)
•Soviet(1944-1991)
•Ukrainian(from 1991)
Each period represents a lot of interesting events in the process of establishment and development of the medical institution, and every page of its development is represented by people, who strived for the improvement of the medical treatment in Bukovyna. Nowadays the educational institution has three educational buildings, a hostel, a library with a reading hall, numerous classrooms and laboratories. Chernivtsi medical college trains specialists with educational qualification level of junior specialist in such specialities: “Treatment department”, “Nursing department”, “Laboratory diagnostic department”, “Obstetrics department”, “Medical preventive department” and bachelor of Nursing. Since 2006 it has started to train students nurses with sight deficiencies in massage. Educational process is performed by 86 staff teachers who have appropriate education and work by profession. The teaching staff includes 5 Candidates of Medical Science, 26 teachers of higher qualification category, 19 teachers-methodologists, 8 teachers are preparing their theses. Cherivtsi medical college actively collaborates with professor-teaching staff of the Bukovynian State Medical University and two medical colleges of Chernivtsi region. Thousands of highly gualified junior medical specialists are the graduates of the college, among them there are many prominent scientists and public statesmen who have been working in Ukraine and abroad. Medical college maintains friendly and business relations with medical institutions of the USA, Canada, Switzerland, Russia and Moldova.
1100 students study in the medical college. Since 1997 Chernvtsi medical college has been directed by Kulyk Oleksandr Fedorovych - Candidate of Medical Science, assistant professor.
