Last week we were honoured to join the Adult Education Week celebrations in Kilimanjaro Ward, hosted at Mawenzi Secondary School, a government school and a potential partner in our growing network.

The event brought together students, parents, teachers and local government education leaders, creating a valuable platform to share Opportunity Education’s work and our commitment to strengthening teaching and learning.

Our Vice President, East Africa Operations, Andy Karas also had the opportunity to share a few reflections on the importance of partnership with government, investing in education reform, strengthening student ownership of learning, developing the leaders of tomorrow, and the role of adult education in building communities that can learn, solve challenges and drive sustainable development.

Beyond the celebration, the event strengthened our relationships with Mawenzi’s school leadership, Ward education leaders and the Kilimanjaro Ward Councillor, reinforcing our belief that meaningful change in education is built through collaboration.

At Opportunity Education, we believe learning should empower people at every stage of life; to grow, take ownership, solve problems and contribute to their communities.

True scale in education isn’t just about providing technology it’s about empowering schools to own their technical infrastructure.

We are seeing a powerful shift in our network schools, moving from a model of dependency to one of self-reliance. At Leera School and at Vivid Dream School, what began as a targeted training session with our Opportunity Education technology expert (Photo 1) quickly evolved into a knowledge transfer. Their internal school technology leads have now taken the reins, successfully facilitating training sessions for fellow staff members (Photos 2–6).

By implementing this “train-the-trainer” approach, we aren’t just solving a short-term technician challenge; we are building long-term operational autonomy. When school leaders have the agency and expertise to support their own teams, technology stops being a hurdle and becomes a reliable, school-owned asset that drives classroom success every single day.

It is inspiring to see our partner schools not just adopting new systems, but mastering them to build their own capacity for innovation.

Great teaching grows through collaboration, educators learning, reflecting, and supporting one another. That's the spirit behind Instructional Leadership at Opportunity Education: not oversight, but shared learning that helps schools celebrate what works and grow where they need it most.

At Mukuru Secondary School, our partner school, this collaborative spirit was on full display last week. Our Instructional Coach, Leveri Mlaki, sat down with the Head of School, Mr M***a Ntandu, to reflect on classroom observations as thinking partners. Together, they celebrated a real strength already taking root: teachers increasingly embracing stronger, student-centred lessons and identified opportunities where more support could help that momentum grow even further.

Together, Leveri and the head of school walked alongside teachers, co-creating stronger lesson plans together and turning shared insight into everyday classroom practice.

This is what real, lasting educational change looks like at Mukuru: not a single event, but a continuous journey of learning side by side. Where teachers grow, school leaders grow, and students thrive.

At Mtakuja Secondary School in Kilimanjaro, a Quest Forward Learning partner school, mathematics teacher William Maneno is showing what it means to turn a classroom into a safe space for learning.

He has transformed a subject many students fear into one they meet with confidence and joy. When the fear fades, students lean in. They participate, they take risks, and they start to believe they can do it.

That shift is not just about mood. A student who feels safe and seen is a student ready to learn. By easing anxiety and building a warmer, more trusting bond with his class, William is creating the conditions where real learning and understanding can take root.

At Opportunity Education, we believe real learning doesn't stop at the classroom door.

It's a belief we share with schools like St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Arusha, a Quest Forward Learning partner where curiosity is given room to grow.

In a recent Biology lesson on Kingdom Plantae guided by Emmanuel Loishie, learning didn't stay indoors. Students stepped outside, letting the environment around them become part of the lesson. Leaves, stems, and roots weren't just diagrams; they were right there to examine, question, and understand.

When students connect classroom concepts to the world they live in, understanding deepens. Ideas stick. Learning becomes something relevant, real, and exciting.

Today, the Opportunity Education team spent a meaningful day at Karanga Secondary School, taking a significant step forward in our mission to transform education.

We had the privilege of meeting with the school's leadership team and academic office team to introduce our Professional Teaching and Learning Culture Programme, designed to support school leaders and teachers in fostering student-centred learning and empowering students to take ownership of their own learning journey.

On July 25, 2026, the Moshi Rural and Vunjo constituency offices, led by Hon. Morris Makoi and Hon. Enock Koola, hosted the first-ever Samia Teacher’s Award, honouring 202 teachers for outstanding 2025 national exam results for Standard 7, Form 4 & Form 6

What does it mean to choose your own future?

Last week, Opportunity Education introduced the Career Pathways Programme pilot to Form 4 students at Mtakuja and Burhani Secondary Schools, helping them identify and pursue their own career directions.

Students explored pathways in depth, including Advanced Level and Technical and Vocational Education. School mentors supported them throughout, helping each student move from uncertainty to clarity. By the end, every student had selected a career goal and pathway.

While this may seem like a small step, for students it demonstrates that, with the right guidance, they can approach their futures with confidence.

This student-made solar system shows what learning by doing really means. It is hands-on, sparks curiosity, and belongs to the students.

This is what Quest Forward Learning is all about. The programme supports Tanzania's shift to competency-based education, where students learn best by building, testing, and trying out ideas for themselves, rather than simply memorising them.

When students own their learning, they are also preparing for their future.
