Mr Japhet Ringo (Environmental Conservation Education Course Co-ordinator UDOM) on the stage officiating World Environmental Day celebrations 5/6/2014 which held at UDOM Café Theater 2 Hall.
Among other things, he said that environmental challenges are escalating following increasing trends in human population and advancement of technology. Meanwhile, he corroborated that youths, (university students in particular) have to take action to mitigate the problem in view of the fact that they not only have the power than other members of the society, but also are the ones who have to live harder life with havocs exacerbated by environmental problems in the long run.
He further argued that this year celebrations are more practical so far as Escudom members went to MINAPA (Mikumi National Park) this year where they got a lot of information about wildlife ecology and human-wildlife interactions in and outside the park. Similarly, he pinpointed out that first year students who persuaded GO 122 (Environmental Conservation Education Course) from BAGE, EDM, BAH, BATCH, and BAED) undertook physical field visits to all streets of Dodoma municipal where they explore environmental problems and addressed them in collaboration with local people in those areas. In conclusion, He potrayed that celebrations encompassed drama, dances, raps, poems, video, topics presentations, just to mention a few which all these divulged that 2014 celebrations are practical oriented.

Due to urbanization and increased population in Dodoma region some environmental problems have become apparent. The Tanzania National Environmental Policy 1997 identifies six major environmental problems in Tanzania. These major problems are land degradation, lack of accessible good quality water for urban and rural inhabitants, environmental pollution, loss of wildlife habitats and biodiversity, deterioration of aquatic system, and deforestation. These national environmental problems are observed in many of Tanzania’s localities. In Dodoma region and the University of Dodoma in that case are of no exceptional. Improper wastes management propagated by littering is common. Deforestation resulting from charcoal burning, clearing of vegetations for new fields and bush fires are also common in many parts of Dodoma and the whole of central zone. Human induced changes on natural ecosystems cause loss of biodiversity and decline in ecological services. The land is being degraded in both urban and rural areas. In urban for example, local garages are letting oil from vehicles to spill in areas around, and in rural areas overgrazing is among the major cause of land degradation.
The environmental problems in Dodoma region increase the level of poverty, diseases and economic hardships to people, and are the main barrier to the attainment of national and international development goals including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Tanzania’s National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (NSGRP). The National Environmental Policy 1997 admits that, “there is a clear cause-and-effect relationship between poverty and environmental degradation.
These environmental problems may greatly be addressed by the environmental conservation and management education that is a tool to changing negative human-environment interactions. In that regard, one of the National Environmental Policy 1997 objectives is “to raise public awareness and understanding of essential linkage between environment and development, and to promote individual and community participation in environmental action”.

Understanding the power of information and knowledge to bringing positive changes, ESCUDOM launched a different programs on environmental education which is aired on radio program has been on air on 2014 The project is designed to give a room for students and the Dodoma community to share their knowledge on environmental management while acknowledging the local knowledge and efforts on environmental conservation.
