MWALIMU NYERERE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY HOSTS HEET PROJECT CLOSURE MEETING ON ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL SAFEGUARDS
The Mwalimu Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology (MNUAT) today convened a closure meeting for the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) Project to assess the successful implementation of environmental and social safeguards during the ex*****on of the project’s construction interventions.
The meeting was officially opened by Dr. Lekumok Kironyi, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Planning, Finance and Administration, who warmly welcomed participants on behalf of the University Management.
Speaking during the opening session, Dr. Kironyi described the meeting as an important milestone in reflecting on the achievements, experiences, and lessons learned throughout the implementation of the HEET Project. He emphasized that the project has significantly contributed to strengthening higher education institutions and improving learning and research infrastructure in support of Tanzania’s economic transformation agenda.
“As we pursued these development goals, it was equally important to ensure that all construction activities were implemented responsibly, safely, inclusively, and in compliance with national laws and the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework requirements,” said Dr. Kironyi.
He commended the strong commitment demonstrated by university management teams, project implementation units, contractors, consultants, supervising engineers, environmental and social specialists, workers, and surrounding communities in ensuring effective management of environmental, health and safety, labor, and social risks throughout the project period.
Dr. Kironyi further acknowledged stakeholders for their collective efforts in promoting occupational health and safety at construction sites, proper waste management and environmental protection, community health and safety, stakeholder engagement and grievance management, prevention of gender-based violence and harassment, as well as compliance with labor management procedures and social inclusion principles.
