Emariete is a beautiful Maasai village in the mountains behind Emburis School and one of the villages to which we supply food. We ask the village chairman or village secretary which 16 families are in need and he/she arranges for the villagers to meet us. We also give out donated clothes and water containers.

The Maasai still live a traditional life with cattle being a very important part of their lives. They also keep goats and, due to their historically nomadic lifestyle being unsustainable now, have adapted to living in one place and growing crops on their land. Many of our children at the school and daycare centre are from the Maasai tribe.

Our help and care for the children and villagers is possible because of our kind sponsors and donors. If you would like to sponsor a child at the school, give a donation to help us buy food or have any questions about Emburis then we'd love to hear from you. Please contact us at: [email protected]

The school holidays are over and the children returned to Emburis on Monday. The daycare was closed last week so that the young children could spend time with their older siblings who were at home.

As well as running the school and daycare centre Emburis also has a Malnutrition project to help vulnerable villagers who are unable to provide enough food for themselves and their families. Our Family Food Project delivers food every week to those in need in our area and our Village Food Project delivers food to one village once a month. We provide food for families in the Maasai villages of Emariete, Mlimani, Olorash and Leshaine. July is the main 'winter' month here in Monduli and it is cold so it is very important for people to have nutritious warm food.

Today was the end of exams and the end of the school term for our students. After lunch they had Class Parties with their teachers and ate biscuits, sweets and had soft drinks. They will be on holiday for 4 weeks and return to Emburis on 5th July.

More class parties and the end of term assembly where Nakaji Lukumay, one of the founders and directors of the school, talked to the children before they went home for their holidays.

Wednesdays are always lively at the school as it is the afternoon for sports. Some children play football, others ball games and others play on the swings and seesaws. Some, like the baby class, still need their afternoon nap. The children are taught it is important to keep your environment clean and safe so, every day, some of the children help clean the school area before going home. Work is going along well on the basketball court and we'll post some pictures soon.

Our help and care for these children is possible because of our kind sponsors and donors. If you would like to sponsor a child at the school, give a donation to help us buy food for the school and daycare children or have any questions about Emburis then we'd love to hear from you. Our children always enjoy their breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack at the day care centre and they always eat well. Some of our families are suffering badly because the adults have lost their jobs in the tourism/hospitality sectors but thankfully we can help by giving the children nutritious food while they are with us. After lunch, six of our day care centre children wanted to 'dress up' so we used some small pieces of beautiful African material we have at the centre.

Today was cool but not raining. We are in the 'Long Rains' season which lasts from March to the end of May (but the Rains can also be quite unpredictable). The day care centre children enjoyed some time inside building with Lego and then playing outside with footballs and generally running around.

Our economy is still suffering badly due to the lack of tourists. If you would like to sponsor a child at the school, give a donation to help us buy food for the school and daycare children or have any questions about Emburis then we'd love to hear from you. Please contact us at [email protected]

We also have a Day Care Centre in Monduli which provides free child care for children from 6 months to 3 years of age. At present we have 25 babies/children registered with us with an average attendance of about 15-18 children every day. The centre opens at 8.30am and closes at 5pm which allows the parents to go to work/look for work knowing their children are safe and well cared for. The children are given porridge at 10am, a nutritious lunch at 12.30pm and, after their afternoon nap, fruit or fruit juice or a blended drink of fruit and vegetables. They have toys to play with, many books and a lovely garden for outside play.

Our daycare staff (from the left) are Juliana (manager); Jessica (cook); Johari (cook); Mwanaisha (assistant manager) and Judy (nanny). All the ladies look after the children throughout the day as well as performing their other duties. The Centre is open Monday to Friday and only closes for the Christmas/New Year holiday.

Our students are taught how important it is to take care of our environment and each other. Students from classes 4, 5, 6 and 7 walked down from the school to the Monduli village football ground and collected litter and rubbish. Now our inter-village football players and spectators and local children and adults can enjoy the clean and safe environment.

We have great teachers at Emburis but we also have great staff members who keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes. Our kitchen staff - Esta, Pascalina, Bernadetta and Flora -cook and serve delicious meals for 250 students and 20 staff members and visitors every day. Our cleaners, Tumaini and Margreth keep the school clean and safe and help look after the children in the playground. Our bus drivers, Zakariah and Babu, drive the children safely to and from school even in the worst muddy conditions. The students also help by washing up dishes and cleaning !!!

[04/25/21]   Thank you so much to everyone who has been interested in our school and who has liked, commented on and shared our posts. We really appreciate your involvement and kind words. Next week we will be posting about our other school staff members who are as important as our teachers because they keep the school running smoothly by cooking nutritious food for our children, driving them to and from school and keeping the school grounds and classrooms clean and safe. Emburis also has a Daycare Centre and a Community Food project and we will post more about those later.

The Covid pandemic has had a devastating effect on the Tanzanian economy as well as other economies world-wide. The Tanzanian economy, especially in our area, relies heavily on tourists as we are close to the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti and other National Parks. Many of our students' parents have been unable to pay their child's school fees due to losing their jobs in the tourism and hospitality sectors (there is no unemployment benefit in Tanzania). We are constantly thinking of strategies to enable these children to remain at Emburis and continue their education. If you would be interested in sponsoring one of our children or giving a donation we would be very grateful. We are very fortunate to have some great sponsors/fundraisers but more are always needed and are always very welcome. To contact us for more details or to ask any questions about Emburis please email [email protected] Asante/thank you

Not about our teachers this time! The sign writer has finished our name on the new school building which looks really good. Today is cool and overcast so some of the children had a quick break from lessons to run and jump to warm up and burn off some energy. Teachers Grace and Agnes and head teacher Isaya enjoyed watching the children's rope jumping !

The children started school again yesterday after their 2 weeks' Easter holidays so now is a good time to introduce you to our teachers and their children.

Teachers Jackie and Judith teach the Baby Class. Jackie educates the children with traditional lessons and Judith teaches the Montessori system. They also work as a very good team and both use the two different learning methods. As the Baby Class children are very young, Jackie and Judith are also very good at caring for their Baby Class as mothers would by helping with clothes, shoes, reassurance and comforting and anything the children need.

We are happy to announce that we now have a Montessori teacher, Judith, teaching the children in our Baby Class. This method of education for young children stresses the development of a child's own initiative and natural abilities especially through practical play and allows children to develop at their own pace. Judith shows the children a way to learn numbers, the alphabet, how to tie shoelaces and many other skills and then leaves the children to experiment and learn through play and practise. She supervises from a distance and returns and helps any child who needs more guidance. The Baby Class children love this method of learning and have very happily combined it with their more traditional lessons from teacher Jackie.
