General information

The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha is one in a network of Pan-African Institutions of Science and Technology located across Sub-Saharan African (SSA). These institutions, which are the proud brainchild of the late Nelson Mandela, envision training and developing the next generation of African scientists and engineers with a view to impacting profoundly on the continent’s development through the application of Science, Engineering and Technology and Innovation (SETI). The NM-AIST, which is accredited by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) is being developed into a world class research intensive institution for postgraduate and post-docs studies and research in SETI. The training in SETI, however, incorporates appreciable doses of relevant business studies and humanities ingredients. Thus the training curricular also incorporate strong innovation and entrepreneurship features, and hence strong academia-industry relations are part of the NM-AIST’s development agenda. NM-AIST’s curricular also seek to accommodate, enable, stimulate and catalyze the innovation and entrepreneurship qualities inherent in the Y-generation for the benefit of SSA’s sustainable development. The Vision of NM-AIST is to become a world-class institution of higher learning dedicated to the pursuit and promotion of excellence in Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation (SETI), and their applications for economic growth and sustainable development in Africa. The Mission is to deliver and promote high quality and internationally competitive teaching and learning, research and innovation, and public service in Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation SETI leveraging on entrepreneurship for enhanced value addition to people and natural resources, with a view to stimulating, catalyzing and promoting economic growth and sustainable development in Tanzania and SSA. NM-AIST as a Model of Academia for Society and Industry; The motto of NM-AIST is “Academia for Society and Industry”. The institution is thus striving to avoid the traditional social divide between academia on the one hand, and the society and industry on the other. Both the training and research at NM-AIST emphasize and reflect responsiveness to the needs and problems of the society and industry. Thus, in effect, NM-AIST is seeking to develop itself into a ‘Transformative Research University’ whose mission has our key features, namely: • Teaching and learning, • Research and innovation, • Technology transfer, and • Societal transformation and co-creation. Key Deliverables from NM-AIST I. Value-added human capital in form of graduates who come out to serve as • Top-notch SET academics in higher learning institutions; • Competent researchers in R&D institutions; • Techno-preneurs, industry captains, innovation managers for stimulating, catalyzing and promoting business start-ups and the growth of the local industry. II. Innovations to enable wealth creation, employment generation and sustainable development in form of: • Tangible products • Industrial and business solutions • Business start-ups • Policy briefs to inform policy makers. III. Publications that reflect effective participation in global SETI research. Teaching and Learning Academic programme clusters NM-AIST has started modestly with the following five academic programme clusters, each of which has the potential of delivering several degree programmes: • Life Sciences and Bio-Engineering - selected and thus clustered because of its multidisciplinary nature and its importance to human and animal livelihood; • Computational and Communication Science and Engineering - selected and thus clustered because of its enabling and facilitation power over all other fields, to generate solutions to complex natural systems and real-life challenges; • Materials, Energy, Water and Environmental Sciences – selected and thus clustered because of the interconnectedness of materials, energy and water, and how they impact on people, the environment and industry; • Earth Sciences and Engineering – being mounted in response to demand following discoveries of huge deposits of natural gas, iron ore and coal in Tanzania and Mozambique, and petroleum in Kenya and Uganda; • Business Studies and Humanities – included to enable the development and acquisition, by the science and engineering students, of the important attributes of leadership, management, innovativeness, and entrepreneurship. Research and Innovation Conduct of high quality responsible and responsive research and innovation is one of the key results areas identified in NM-AIST’s Corporate Strategic Plan, and through which the institution wants to have appreciable impact. The research and innovation activities at NM-AIST are guided by its Research and Innovation Policy which is designed to ensure proper conduct, and to develop the capacity to generate new knowledge that will have strong impact on the society and industry. In order to operationalize the Research and Innovation Policy, a Research and Innovation (R&I) Agenda has also been developed. The R&I Agenda is aligned to the Tanzania National Development Vision 2025, national policies and strategies, as well as the East Africa Community and SADC regional development strategies. In formulating the R&I Agenda, cognizance has been taken of the fact that the main challenges Tanzania, and the rest of Africa, face in the coming years are related to Sub-Saharan Africa’s rapid population growth and globalization of the world economy. The Research and Innovation (R&I) Agenda of NM-AIST is driven by the desire to respond to the needs and problems of the society and the industry. Emphasis is given to multi-disciplinarity and team-work. Staff The academic staff force of NM-AIST comprises a core of resident permanent/contract staff recruited competitively from within and outside the Eastern African Region and a pool of adjunct professors from various partner institutions the world over. Students NM-AIST enrols students competitively from within Tanzania, Eastern Africa and elsewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa. In order to promote an environment that is characterised by academic and research discipline, hard-work, entrepreneurship, guts and courage, NM-AIST welcomes applicants from outside Africa as well. Salient Features of NM-AIST in support of World-Class Research Environment NM-AIST is in Arusha which is a fast growing city within Eastern Africa and is the headquarters of the expanding East Africa Community, currently with five member states, namely; Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda. Arusha is the central point in Africa between Cape Town and Cairo. It is also the hub of a vibrant tourist industry. Furthermore, Arusha region is within one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. NM-AIST has easy international access through the Kilimanjaro International Airport (only 35 km away) to the East. Furthermore, NM-AIST is within easy reach to three of the best natural wonders of Africa namely: Serengeti National Park, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Ngorongoro Crater. Other easily reachable natural heritage sites include: the Olduvai Gorge (the cradle of humankind), Lake Manyara, Tarangire and Arusha National Parks.
