Shepherds Schools was founded in 2003 by Mama Lucy Kamptoni, a Tanzanian entrepreneur and leader who is among the co-founders of Business & Entrepreneurship Support Tanzania (BEST), a local micro-finance & training organization for small farmers and entrepreneurs. Since its founding in 2003 Shepherds Schools has grown from 10 Nursery children in a single classroom to over 600 children up to Second
ary grade levels in twenty three classrooms. In addition to extra classrooms, the schools now all have libraries, as well as computer and science laboratories. The schools also offer boarding facilities, enabling students in need to not only learn but to live in a safe, supportive and secure environment. All staff and faculty are from the local community and every parent, teacher and student are adamant in their commitment to ensuring the success of their school. The School Parents Committee meets once a term to plan for the development of the school as far as the academic and disciplinary matters are concerned so as to meet the school objectives. It is this passion and dedication that helps to drive Shepherds vision forward, pushing both teacher and student alike. The schools follow the national curriculum of Tanzania and, over the past years, have consistently performed well academically. While all courses are taught in English, Kiswahili, the country’s national language, is a required course at each grade level, and the school offers clubs that celebrate the vibrant culture and history of Tanzania. The tuition fees charged are used to cover the running costs and subsidize the costs for orphans and other students who might not otherwise be able to afford a high-quality education.
