(Maggie Mills)

Constructives, Rebuttals, Summaries, Final Focus...
• 實戰密度: Daily Mini Debates、Redo Speeches、Day 5–6 Camp Tournament (共四場比賽)

A G5 International Student Mom's Honest Take: Why I Chose a 6-Day, 5-Night Full English Debate Camp in Taiwan.

Sometimes, I feel like the growth my child brings me is more than what I teach her.
Since my daughter started English debate last year, the way we converse at home has genuinely changed.
She used to just ask, "Why?"

Now, she often says things like:
• "Mommy, try to put yourself in the other person's shoes."
• "Would the reason be the same if you were them?"
• "Can we break this issue down into two separate directions?"
Sometimes I just share small things about work, yet she can calmly and non-judgmentally ask me:
• "What if we look at the opposite side?"
• "Which factor do you think truly carries more weight?"

In those moments, I truly feel that debate isn't teaching her to "win," it's teaching her to "think."

1. 💰 Financial Efficiency: Investing $60,000 to Avoid $300,000 in Overseas Waste
As a mom and as the founder, I see the crucial skills Asian students need to fill.
Through my work, I've checked out numerous international debate camps: Harvard, NSD, Stanford, etc. I realized one thing:
🇺🇸 Two-week residential programs at top US camps often start at NT$200,000 (approx. 6,500 USD) and frequently go up to NT250,000 ($8,000 USD).
However, many of these strong programs are still primarily skill-oriented (delivery, drills, briefs). While useful for US high schoolers, they don't always address the core needs of Asian students: "thinking frameworks" and "deep comprehension."

I know my own child's situation—her English is fine, but she needs someone to guide her in "organizing thoughts, seeing multiple perspectives, and articulating clearly."

That’s why we brought the international PF training logic back to Taiwan, delivering two weeks of US camp effectiveness in six days.

2. 🏆 Champion Endorsement: A Communication Skill That Lasts a Lifetime
The skills we train are precisely what international debate champions emphasize—high-efficiency communication and critical decision-making.

"PF camp didn't just teach me how to win rounds; it taught me how to articulate complex issues clearly to any audience. That is a communication and decision-making skill set you use every day."

— Maggie Mills, 2020 NSDA National Public Forum Champion Alumna
NSDA (National Speech and Debate Association) is the most authoritative high school debate association in the US.

3. 🔥 Why Does the Residential Camp Deliver 5–10x the Impact of Classes?

Our purpose this winter break is not just to run a fun camp; it is to implement the full logic of US PF training. The children achieve one simple goal in 6 days and 5 nights: "Immerse themselves in English, immerse themselves in thinking."

This intensity is something no online course can replicate. (We've been through a full summer & full semester of online classes, but the immersion of the residential camp is completely different.)

We condensed two weeks of US training volume into six days of high-density practice:

• Frameworks: Constructives, Rebuttals, Summaries, Final Focus...
• Advanced Thinking: Weighing / Meta-Weighing, Fallacy Training, Evidence Research...
• Practice Density: Daily Mini Debates, Redo Speeches, Camp Tournament (4 rounds on Day 5–6)
4. ❤️ The Mom's Final Word: Not Seeking a Champion, But Seeking Wholeness

My child doesn't need to become a champion in elementary school. But I genuinely hope she develops the following:
• The ability to see things more comprehensively.
• Resilience against criticism.
• The skill to clearly articulate her thoughts calmly.
• The ability to understand others' perspectives instead of immediately refuting them.
• The confidence to express herself anywhere she goes in the future.
Since starting debate, I feel she is moving in this direction. And I expect these 6 days and 5 nights to give her another powerful push.

NY Post: “97% of Gen Z students use AI for homework, essays and college apps” (2025)

The Guardian: “Thousands of UK university students caught cheating using AI” (2025)

AI isn’t the villain — but this weekend’s tournament reminded us how much our children still need to learn to keep a healthy distance.

During a national online debate tournament this weekend,
a few students were reported for “unusual behavior”—
barely blinking, eyes fixed on one corner of the screen, and reading almost word for word.

After reviewing the footage, the organizers confirmed that some teams had used AI tools to generate content during prep time.
The result? Disqualification, and even a suspension from joining future tournaments this semester.

Watching those videos, teachers felt a mix of sadness and concern.
Because this isn’t just about rules.
It’s a sign of the times — our children are learning to live with AI,
but not yet when to draw the line.

We don’t forbid students from using AI.
It can be an incredible learning partner — a brainstorming buddy that sparks ideas and organizes thoughts.
But when students let AI do the speaking for them,
learning quietly slips away.

AI might say: “Hey, I didn’t tell them to copy me — I just gave really good answers!”
🤣

📰 AI cheating scandals are now spreading across classrooms and universities worldwide.

📎 According to The New York Post (2025), citing a ScholarshipOwl survey of 12,811 high school and college students,
97% of Gen Z students reported using AI tools in their studies:
66% for subject review, 56% for test prep, 46% for note-taking, 31% for writing essays, and 20% for college or scholarship applications.
Experts warned this trend shows that “AI isn’t helping students think — it’s doing the thinking for them.”
👉 Source: NY Post: “97% of Gen Z students use AI for homework, essays and college apps” (2025)

Meanwhile, The Guardian (2025) reported that
over 7,000 confirmed cases of AI-related cheating occurred across UK universities in 2023–24 —
roughly 5.1 cases per thousand students, up from 1.6 the previous year.
Many institutions have since added “AI transparency clauses,” requiring students to disclose how they use AI in coursework.
👉 Source: The Guardian: “Thousands of UK university students caught cheating using AI” (2025)

Even the Ivy League isn’t immune:
a Yale University student was suspended for alleged AI misuse during a final exam and later filed a lawsuit,
highlighting how even elite schools are grappling with the blurred lines between AI use and academic integrity.

💬 Why this incident reminded us why debate education matters — more than ever.

In the past, knowledge was power.
The more facts you knew, the more authority you had.

But in the age of AI, knowledge is everywhere.
Machines can summarize hundreds of research papers in seconds — faster and more fluently than we ever could.

So what will truly set our children apart?
👉 Critical thinking. Judgment. The courage to question.

That’s why debate — especially English debate — matters.
It’s not about “sounding impressive.”
It’s about learning to reason, to verify, to listen,
and to find your own voice in a world flooded with information.

And this is why our winter camp is built around
🌙 24-hour teacher guidance and full-day immersion.
Because real learning happens in those small, human moments —
when a teacher sees a student’s eyes light up, hesitate, or suddenly understand.

AI can’t recognize that spark. But teachers can.
And so can parents who choose to trust the process — and the people behind it.

In the age of AI, warmth, trust, and critical thinking are what make us human.

Public Forum Debate | Explained | Vancouver Debate Academy 28/10/2025

(Case-Building):

30 Years Ago vs. Today — Why Hasn’t Learning Changed?

Thirty years ago, we memorized vocabulary lists, filled in grammar blanks, and copied passages line by line.
Thirty years later, our children are doing the same.

The classrooms are brighter, the tools more advanced — but the purpose of learning and the way we test it haven’t changed at all.

And yet, the world has.
AI can now write essays and translate instantly,
but students are still trapped in worksheets and test drills.

I’m not a teacher, but I’ve listened to almost every online class.
I’ve watched students go from silent to curious,
from copying sentences to truly thinking about what they want to say.

That’s when I realized —
the real goal of learning isn’t perfect grammar.
It’s that spark in a child’s eyes that says, “I have something to say.”

Language should never be reduced to grades or exams.
It’s a way to understand the world, express oneself, and connect with others.

Our children’s future shouldn’t be limited by the learning systems of the past.

🎙️ The Four Appeals of Argument: Learning to Speak with Purpose 🌟

This week in class, students explored an essential question:

“Why do some people make us want to keep listening?”

They learned about the Four Appeals of Argument, a timeless idea from classical rhetoric that helps every speaker communicate clearly and persuasively.

🧠 1️⃣ Logos — Logic & Reasoning
Use facts, evidence, and reasoning to persuade.
The teacher showed Steve Jobs’s iPhone launch speech, where clear logic and examples were far more convincing than dramatic delivery.

🤝 2️⃣ Ethos — Credibility
Make your audience trust you.
Students discussed why we believe doctors, teachers, or experts more easily — because confidence, tone, and professionalism build credibility.
They also practiced speaking with confident posture and eye contact.

❤️ 3️⃣ Pathos — Emotion
Help the audience feel your message.
Through a Kent State protest photo, students observed how emotion and empathy make a message memorable — not through tears, but through sincerity and human connection.

⏰ 4️⃣ Kairos — Timing & Relevance
Say the right thing at the right time.
Using a “limited-time offer” car ad, the class explored how timing and pacing can turn ordinary words into powerful persuasion.
Students learned that pauses, tone, and timing are also part of effective delivery.

👨‍👩‍👧 Try It at Home —

Parents can extend this learning at home through simple reflection and discussion:

Watch a short ad or famous speech and ask: “Which appeal do you notice here?”

Let your child explain one topic in two different ways — logically, then emotionally.

During family conversations, ask: “Why do you think that?” to help them structure reasoning.

These small, everyday moments strengthen your child’s ability to think, feel, and express ideas —
the foundation of confident and compassionate communication. 💬✨

Education Next(2024) https://www.educationnext.org/resolved-debate-programs-boost-literacy-and-college-enrollment/
https://chicagodebates.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Mezuk-JNE-Summer-2009.pdf

Anderson & Mezuk(2012) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22633913/

--------

------------------------------
• Having “many activities, just a little of each” often leads to breadth without depth, which limits growth in critical thinking and academic language.
• Debate is not a short-term performance class; it’s a systematic rebuilding of thinking and academic skills that requires sustained commitment.
• Multiple studies show that long-term participation in debate improves reading achievement, increases graduation rates, and strengthens college readiness. The effect comes from deep-learning mechanisms such as learning by teaching (Protégé Effect) and self-explanation.

We understand that parents want children to explore broadly. However, once students enter the golden years of academic training (typically upper elementary), a stop-and-go approach tends to keep learning at the level of surface techniques and short-term memory—making it hard to crystallize real competitive advantage.

Critical thinking especially takes time and accumulation: it involves source selection, organizing evidence, causal and comparative reasoning, and clear real-time communication under pressure. These abilities take shape only on a consistent, focused pathway.

------------------
Why Thinking Training Doesn’t “Show Results” in the Short Term

Debate is not about “speaking fast and loud.” It’s about reading complex information accurately, writing it clearly, and explaining it convincingly. With only brief exposure, students usually pick up “speaking tricks” without completing the deep learning loop from input to output—so the qualitative shift in thinking doesn’t happen.

Debate = Institutionalizing the Feynman Technique

The Feynman Technique emphasizes explaining difficult ideas in plain language to someone who doesn’t know them. While teaching, knowledge gaps surface; students then go back to fill those gaps and simplify their explanations—this is how “real understanding” happens. Debate classes do this every single week.

How do the mechanisms work?

。Protégé Effect / Learning by Teaching: Simply expecting to teach others pushes learners to use better strategies and remember longer, leading to deeper understanding (Nestojko et al.).

。Self-Explanation: Putting newly learned ideas into one’s own words and linking them to prior knowledge significantly improves comprehension and transfer. This effect has been repeatedly verified in classic studies and later reviews.

。The benefits of teaching or expecting to teach are consistently observed across many studies and reviews (Fiorella & Mayer). In short: if you can teach it clearly, you truly understand it.

。Debate formalizes these mechanisms into a repeatable cycle:
Read (research) → Write (build arguments) → Speak (teach & debate) → Revise (reflect & correct)—over and over again.

Evidence: What Measurable Outcomes Does Debate Produce?

Below are the parent-focused, quantifiable indicators with sources:

Reading achievement gains: A large U.S. evaluation found that in years when students participated in debate, reading scores rose by ~0.13 SD (roughly two-thirds of a typical year’s growth).
Education Next (2024)
https://www.educationnext.org/resolved-debate-programs-boost-literacy-and-college-enrollment/

Completion and college-going advantages: Long-term studies from the Chicago Urban Debate League (UDL) show that competitive debaters have higher graduation rates and better academic performance and college readiness. One study on Black male students found ~70% higher graduation probability and significantly reduced dropout risk (controlling for 8th-grade baselines).
Mezuk et al. (2009)
https://chicagodebates.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Mezuk-JNE-Summer-2009.pdf

College transition & critical thinking: Recent work in Boston indicates that interscholastic policy debate promotes critical thinking and increases the likelihood of attending college.
Schueler & Larned (2023)
https://scholar.harvard.edu/sites/scholar.harvard.edu/files/schueler/files/schueler-larned-2023-interscholastic-policy-debate-promotes-critical-thinking-and-college-going-evidence-from-boston.pdf

Long-term tracking (Chicago Public Schools): A ten-year analysis similarly found positive associations between debate participation and high school graduation and ACT performance.
Anderson & Mezuk (2012)
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22633913/

Bottom line: Debate is not just “better speaking.” Through high-quality reading + argument writing + on-the-spot reasoning + rebuttal & revision, debate develops integrated literacy and academic resilience. These show up in graduation rates, standardized assessments, and college readiness.

-----------------------
Our Approach: A 3–6 Year Skill-Building Roadmap

Begin in upper elementary (G3–G6) and continue through high school (G10–G12), adjusting as students mature.

Foundation Stage (G3–G6)
Focus: deep-reading habits, source evaluation (scholarly sourcing), structured notes and visuals, basic argument frameworks (claim–reason–evidence), short talks with feedback.
Evidence: Early, multi-component writing interventions produce moderate gains in writing skill; earlier introduction helps.

Transition Stage (G7–G9)
Focus: systematic evidence gathering, issue-based writing (position → rebuttal → rewrite), tournament practice (clarity under time pressure), self-explanation and “teach-back” drills.
Evidence: Both self-explanation and expecting to teach have been repeatedly shown to strengthen comprehension and memory.

Breakthrough Stage (G10–G12)
Focus: cross-disciplinary reading (social science/technology/policy), research writing, evaluating credibility of evidence, argument speech and extemporaneous integration; practical preparation for local exams / AP / IB / college essays.
Link: Long-term debaters tend to show advantages in reading and quantitative assessments, GPA, and postsecondary enrollment.
(Schueler & Larned, 2023—link above)

--------------
Top Three Parent Questions

Q1: How soon will we see change?
A: Fluency in delivery often becomes noticeable around 8–12 weeks. However, the deeper capacities (reading depth, writing structure, evidence gathering) typically stabilize after 2–3 terms, and major qualitative shifts often appear from year 2 onward. This timeline aligns with research showing that expecting to teach and self-explanation need iterative cycles to produce durable change.

Q2: With so many activities, can we just try a few classes?
A: You can try, but the real learning curve comes from the read–write–speak–revise cycle and continuous evidence libraries students build over time. Studies consistently show that steady participation correlates with gains in reading achievement, graduation rates, and college transition.

Q3: How do we measure progress?
A: Beyond trophies, prioritize academic indicators:

Monthly volume and quality of academic reading (verified sources/databases)

Argument-writing samples (completeness of claim–reason–evidence–rebuttal-rewrite)

Clarity of oral explanations and rebuttal-revision strength (self-review via recordings)

Trends in standardized or school-based reading and writing scores (viewed over the medium to long term)

-----------------

Parent Tips: Make the Long-Term Investment Work Better

。Fixed schedule: 1–2 sessions weekly, sustained for at least a semester; avoid frequent switching.

。Reading co-prep: Help build a student-curated evidence folder (news, academic sites, reports) to practice filtering and comparison.

。Write–speak integration: Ask your child to explain a written paragraph out loud—“teaching others” exposes blind spots.

。Reflection log: After each round or practice, note three items to improve next time—this reinforces the self-correction loop.

。Feynman Card (weekly): “What I think I know / Example or analogy / What I still don’t understand / Sources to consult next week.”

。Thirty-second teach-back: At home, parents ask only three prompts—Why? So what? Example?—to trigger expecting to teach and self-explanation for stronger understanding and retention.
