This week’s guest lecture, Dr. Po-Chia Tseng offered a powerful rethinking of HIV care in Taiwan by showing that healthcare is not only biomedical but also emotional. Dr. Tseng traced how, in the 1980s and 1990s HIV was shaped by fear, shame and disgust in media and public discourse. These emotions did not simply reflect personal attitudes, they helped construct HIV positive individuals as social outsiders and many patients became missing from care.
What changed over time was not only treatment but the emotional environment of care. Through affective labor, healthcare providers and case managers built trust, empathy and connection with patients. Counseling, regular contact, and even the design of HIV related service spaces helped patients feel safer and more willing to remain in care. In this way, emotions became part of governance not just private experience.
I had never really thought about healthcare spaces in this way before. The lecture made me realize that trust and emotional connection can be just as important as medicine itself. It made me think that public health is not only about medicine or policy but also about how people are made to feel fear, safety, stigma or belonging.
