Industrial Visit to Medigen Vaccine Biologics Corp.
The program recently organized a field visit to Medigen Vaccine Biologics Corp. (MVC) as part of the Pharmaceuticals Industry and Infectious Disease Control courses. The visit was designed to expose students to real-world applications of vaccine development and to deepen their understanding of Taiwan’s biotechnology and public health manufacturing capacity. Students, a teaching assistant, and Prof. Jean were warmly received by Ms. Lynda and the CEO of Medigen, Leo Lee, who is also an alumnus of Taipei Medical University. The reception highlighted the strong academic-industry connection and the continued contribution of TMU alumni to global health innovation.

The factory tour, led by Ms. Lynda, provided students with a detailed overview of vaccine production processes, including standard operating procedures, safety protocols, and quality assurance systems. Participants observed key stages of vaccine manufacturing and gained insights into how stringent safety standards are maintained throughout production. The tour also introduced Medigen’s products, including Envacgen for Enterovirus, developed by the company.

Following the tour, students attended a presentation session where MVC representatives elaborated on the company’s quality management systems, production standards, and organizational culture. This session further enriched students’ understanding of vaccine development history and industrial-scale biomedical production.

In a closing address, CEO Leo Lee delivered an inspiring message emphasizing Taiwan’s capacity and capability to develop and produce vaccines, underscoring the importance of strengthening national and global health security.
The program expresses its sincere appreciation to Medigen Vaccine Biologics Corp. for hosting the visit and to all speakers and staff for their generous engagement. Such experiential learning opportunities continue to bridge academic knowledge with industry practice and inspire future professionals in global health and pharmaceutical sciences.

Realistic Modeling of Geographic Accessibility to Healthcare in Low- and Middle-income Countries

We were honored to host Professor Nicolas Ray, Director of the Institute of Global Health, University of Genva as a distinguished guest lecturer in Professor Jean’s Fundamentals of Health Economics and Financing course.

Professor Nicolas delivered an insightful lecture titled “Realistic modeling of Geographic Accessibility to Healthcare in Low- and Middle-income Countries.” He demonstrated how geographic barriers – often overlooked in traditional economic models – are fundamental to determining health outcomes and resource allocation. By integrating complex geospatial datasets like landcover, elevation, and population density, his work provides a sophisticated lens through which we can visualize the physical challenges populations face when trying to reach life-saving care.

His presentation offered valuable perspectives on this vital topic, and it was truly a pleasure to have him share his expertise with us.
