🇹🇭 Hello everyone! We are the ANFREL team!
We can’t believe it’s already our final week in Thailand!
This week, we joined many meetings with different organizations and also filmed our internship reflection videos, looking back on everything we learned over the past month.
One of the highlights this week was that Dean Bao came to Thailand to visit us! He checked in on how our internship was going, had dinner with us, and listened to us share our experiences from the past month. We were really happy and thankful for his visit.
Besides our internship, we also made the most of our last few days in Thailand by visiting a floating market and a seafood market. It was a great chance to experience the local culture and enjoy lots of delicious Thai food.
The past month went by so quickly. This internship not only helped us learn more about election observation, but also gave us the chance to meet people from different countries and learn many things that we couldn’t learn in the classroom.
Thank you, ANFREL and GSIP, for giving us such a meaningful and unforgettable experience! 🇹🇭✨ #

Hello everyone, we are BERSIH team 🇲🇾
As our internship at BERSIH comes to an end, we wrapped up our final day by presenting our project, “AI in Elections and Democracy: Taiwan’s Opportunities & Risks.” It was also a new topic for members of BERSIH, and we were happy to see so much curiosity through the questions, discussions, and experiences everyone shared. It made our final presentation even more meaningful.
When we first came to Malaysia, we hoped to learn how NGOs work and gain a better understanding of democracy in Malaysia. Looking back now, we realize we learned so much more than we ever expected.
From visiting different NGOs and the Malaysian Parliament to joining meetings and discussions at the BERSIH office, every experience gave us a deeper understanding of civil society, democracy, and the people working behind the scenes to create positive change. Seeing their passion and dedication reminded us that meaningful change is built through the efforts of ordinary people who care deeply about their communities.
More than anything, we’re grateful for the people we met along the way. Thank you, BERSIH, for welcoming us so warmly, answering our endless questions, sharing your knowledge and experiences, and making us feel like part of the team from day one. Your kindness, humor, and hospitality made this internship truly unforgettable.
We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to our department and professors for making this opportunity possible. Thank you for your guidance, encouragement, and continuous support throughout this journey. The BERSIH team also asked us to pass along their greetings and heartfelt thanks to all of you, especially our Dean, our supervisor/department chair John, and Professor Dragon. 😊
As we head back to Taiwan, we’ll definitely miss the food, the laughter in the office, and the wonderful people we met in Malaysia.
Thank you, BERSIH. We hope our paths cross again someday. 🇲🇾❤️🇹🇼

We have now finished our third week in Thailand. This week, we continued learning more about election observation and had the chance to learn from different organizations.
One of our highlights this week was meeting PPCRV from the Philippines. They shared how they work on voter education, volunteer training, and election observation. It was interesting to learn how people in different countries work to support democracy.
Besides attending meetings, we also finished our internship assignments. By reading reports, organizing information, and designing our own questionnaire, we learned more about the work behind election observation.

As part of our internship with BERSIH, we had the opportunity to visit the Parliament of Malaysia today and learn more about how the country’s democratic institutions work.
During our visit, we met with YB Hassan Abdul Karim, YB Wong Chen, and YB Adam Adli. Each of them shared their experiences and perspectives on parliamentary work, Malaysia’s political system, governance, and the country’s role in the region and beyond. Their openness gave us the chance to ask questions, exchange ideas, and better understand the realities of public service and policymaking.
Visiting Parliament on a sitting day also allowed us to experience the atmosphere of the institution firsthand. Seeing the busy environment, the security arrangements, and the parliamentary proceedings taking place throughout the building gave us a glimpse into the daily work behind Malaysia’s legislative process.
This visit broadened our understanding of democracy beyond the classroom. It reminded us that learning about politics is not only about reading books or attending lectures, but also about interacting/listening to different perspectives and engaging in meaningful conversations with those involved in shaping public policy.
We are sincerely grateful to BERSIH and the Members of Parliament for welcoming us and sharing their time and insights. It was a meaningful experience that will stay with us long after our internship.

Hello everyone! We are the BERSIH team. This week of my internship gave me the opportunity to gain a closer understanding of Malaysia’s civil society and to see how NGOs actively promote democratic participation.
This week, we traveled to Kuala Lumpur to attend a conference as observers. The theme of the conference was “Reject Political Apathy, Deepen Reform Through Your Vote.” In Malaysia, many people work far from their hometowns, and because of the distance and travel costs, they often choose not to return home to vote. As a result, voter turnout has remained low, and political instability has become a recurring issue. Over time, many young people have become politically apathetic, believing that a single vote cannot make a difference. The conference aimed to encourage more people to participate in public affairs, value their right to vote, and recognize the importance of every ballot. Although we attended as observers, the discussions helped me realize that elections are about much more than competition between candidates. A healthy democracy also depends on an active civil society that continuously encourages civic engagement.
The following day, our department director traveled from Taiwan to visit us in Malaysia and listen to what we had learned during our internship. We presented our research projects to both the director and our internship organization, focusing on Generation Z protest movements in different countries. When I first arrived, many of these topics were completely new to me. Now, I feel much more confident in organizing information, analyzing complex issues, and presenting my own perspectives. Looking back, I can clearly see how much I have grown over the past two weeks.
This internship is more than simply experiencing life in a different country. It has given me the chance to observe different political cultures firsthand and to reflect on the relationship between democracy, civic participation, and social advocacy. Every day brings new knowledge and new perspectives, helping me better understand Malaysia while also encouraging me to think more deeply about the kind of person I hope to become in the future.

Our second week in Thailand has been full of new learning experiences. We started to get more involved in ANFREL’s work and had more opportunities to connect with different civil society organizations.
This week, we had a meeting with WeWatch, a youth-led civic organization in Thailand. Through their sharing, we learned more about how local organizations promote citizen participation, train volunteers, and conduct election observation.

👊 Exploring the Possibilities of Social Reform and Civil Advancement
Hello everyone! We are the BERSIH team. We’re excited to share the profound insights gained from visiting five key Malaysian NGOs!
Guided by BERSIH, we connected with NSI (migrant workers' rights), SUARAM (anti-abuse of power & human rights), KOMAS (racial harmony), and EMPOWER (gender equality). These visits revealed the two core forces driving Malaysian civil society: frontline advocacy against institutional threats—such as SUARAM’s historic protests against the Internal Security Act (ISA)—and grassroots empowerment through progressive reform to tackle conservative social structures.
This valuable two-way dialogue also crossed borders. We shared Taiwan's historical journey from authoritarianism to democracy, along with our ongoing efforts in gender equality. This cross-cultural exchange deepened our understanding of handling real-world social issues.
What impressed us most was how these organizations collaborate under structural pressure. We realized there are countless ways to advance society, whether by leading the charge or rooting deep in the community. Seeing youths from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds, including organizations like ABIM, unite for change has inspired us to reflect on the impact we can bring back to our own country.

🇲🇾 Our GSIP Journey Begins
Hi everyone, we are BERSIH team and our GSIP journey in Malaysia is off to a meaningful start!
One of our most memorable experiences so far was joining a community event with the Bersih team. Through interactive activities, conversations with participants, and collecting stamps in a symbolic passport, we had the opportunity to learn more about Myanmar’s culture, try their tranditional food and hear different perspectives from the community. We've gained valuable insights into the role of youth, cultural exchange, and civic engagement. It was inspiring to witness people coming together in solidarity while celebrating diversity.
This week also marked the start of our internship at Bersih, where we met the team and discussed the exciting work we’ll be doing throughout the month. We are especially grateful for the warm hospitality of everyone at Bersih, who welcomed us with delicious meals, meaningful conversations, and genuine kindness that made us feel at home.
Outside the office, we’ve been enjoying Malaysia’s diverse food, vibrant streets, and little everyday discoveries. We’re excited for everything that’s still to come and look forward to sharing more of our journey in the weeks ahead.
P/s: We also learned two important lessons during our first few days in Malaysia: always remember to bring a Type G power adapter (UK standard plug), and don’t forget to press the pedestrian crossing button before waiting for the green light!
