Hello to all friends who are passionate about historical European martial arts!
I (your humble editor) just returned to Taiwan yesterday, and I’m still a bit tired—so this post is a little late. I swear I’m not slacking off or anything, haha!
On the 9th and 10th of this month, the Einherjar HEMA Club in Hong Kong hosted the Einherjar Cup HEMA Tournament 2025, an international HEMA competition. Our team from Fechtschule Ka-lâm had three members participating, including myself. We had the honor of meeting skilled fighters and groups from all over the world.
One group that truly surprised and impressed us was Ursa Major HEMA Academy from Western Australia. They’re all incredibly experienced swordsmen—not only highly skilled, but also extremely warm and passionate. They performed brilliantly during the matches, and both during and after the tournament, they were more than willing to share their techniques and insights. They’re truly fierce yet gentle warriors, and it was our absolute honor to meet them at the Einherjar Cup.
Aside from competing, we were also happy to share meals and conversations with our friends from Einherjar. Everyone from Hong Kong was witty, enthusiastic, and so welcoming—it made us feel like we weren’t just there for a tournament, but to connect with like-minded people who share the same passion and plenty of common interests.
Seeing all the top-tier fighters from around the world at this tournament, we realized there wasn’t much room for us to place this time. But that only motivates us to train harder and aim for better results in future competitions.
Although none of us placed in the official tournament, I was lucky enough to win the fun event that followed—the "Lone Survivor"! Being the last one standing felt quite rewarding, especially since the prize was such a unique and hilarious item: an "assassin teapot" that can hold two types of liquids and lets you pour either one depending on which air vent you press. So cool!
This was actually my very first international HEMA tournament, and I never expected to learn so many tactics or gain such clear insight into areas where I need to improve. I also didn’t expect to meet so many amazing, passionate, and friendly people through the competition. I’m already looking forward to returning to the Einherjar Cup next year!
