Interesting facts behind triple stimulus vouchers

📌三倍券如何振興經濟？
It’s October now, and it’s far from the time when triple stimulus vouchers were released. It’s really exciting that we “earn” NT＄2000, but do they really help Taiwan’s economy? Here are three crucial factors for this to work.

📌三倍券需具備的第一個要素：時長限制
First, the government must provide a proper length of time for us to use our vouchers. At this time, we can use them from July to December, how long it is! Some consider that it can stimulate the economy for long, but others assume that it lasts too long and may have little impact. Yet, it’s a matter of debate, and we couldn’t argue the case until we see the result of this policy.

📌三倍券需具備的第二個要素：紙本較電子更能促進經濟循環
Second, some research indicates that the paper vouchers are more useful than the electronic ones. Many people may think that the electronic vouchers are more environmentally friendly and convenient, but actually, they do not serve one of the main purposes of triple stimulus vouchers. That’s because the paper ones can create a boom in the economic cycle which the electronic ones can’t: Many stores provide discounts for the paper vouchers, which will make customers have a greater willingness to pay their bills with paper vouchers. After the stores earn the vouchers, they can choose either to exchange them or to use them, but since many stores provide discounts for the paper vouchers, they are more likely to spend the paper vouchers they earned for the discounts, which can make new consuming circulations. On the other hand, since many stores don’t provide discounts for electronic ones, they can't be used as coupons like the paper ones. So they can't create a boom in the economic cycle like the paper ones.

📌三倍券需具備的第三個要素：盡量使用在非生活必需品上
Third, which is the most important factor, is that triple stimulus vouchers should be used in the service industry rather than getting daily necessities. Let’s take tissues and movies for example. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, will we give up on getting one sack of tissue from the supermarket because of the risk of being exposed to COVID-19? The answer is “No”. But will you stop going to the movies for the same reason? Yes. Because we need the daily necessities to live normal lives. However, we don’t need to go to a movie theater to survive. That’s how the economy got affected. So if we use triple stimulus vouchers in obtaining daily necessities, then there won’t be any additional economic activity. Therefore, it is important for us to use the vouchers in the right way.

All above are the hidden theories of the operation of triple stimulus voucher. They’re not easy to be considered but are the essential parts of stimulus vouchers. Let’s spend them wisely before they expired!

The reasons behind Thai protest

📌泰國學生發起抗議的緣由（主要訴求：改選國會、改寫憲法、限制王權）
The protest which is currently led by Thai students has been the biggest protest since the military seized power six years ago. It started at the beginning of the year, but it was procrastinated due to the pandemic outbreak. It started again as an exiled Thai activist, Wanchalearm, was abducted by armed men outside his house in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
It is said that he was kidnapped by Thai government. Their requests are to reform the monarchy of the country, change the military-written constitution and the dissolution of the parliament.

📌民眾質疑皇室必要性、議員貪污致使人民失望
The Royal family of Thailand are usually respected by Thai people. The country even has strict laws that forbid citizens to be disrespectful or talk about the embarrassing details of the family. Bhumibol Adulyadej, conferred with the title King Bhumibol the Great in 1987, was the ninth monarch of Thailand from the Chakri dynasty, titled Rama IX. After he passed away, King Vajiralongkorn, as known as Rama X, who was crowned in 2019, made a few new laws to expand his power and interfere with Thai politics. The prestige of the royal family has decreased ever since. During the Coronavirus outbreak in Thailand, he even fled to a hotel in Germany. This inspired Thai people to question whether they really need a king or not. They are also disappointed when they found out the senators corrupt the taxis instead of making contributions to the country.

📌以幽默的方式表達自身訴求
There were protests led by students before in 1973 and 1976; unfortunately, both of them were end with massacre. In order not to make the same mistake, students are using their sense of humor as a weapon, like adapting the theme song of the famous animation Hamtaro, using the gesture from Hunger Game as a sign of resistance to dictactorship, and even cosplaying as a Harry Potter character to sneer at the parliament. By using these methods, nobody was arrested yet, but we still have to wait for a while to see whether these actions will work or not.

Frozen系列真的都很精彩呢！除了Frozen系列我也超級喜歡Harry Potter系列書籍和電影，現在來介紹一些哈利波特的學院和地點吧吧！

Gryffindor葛來分多
始創人是Godric Gryffindor，代表著勇氣、氣勢、膽量和騎士氣慨。代表顏色是血紅色和金色，對應於火元素。葛來分多的守護神是獅子。學院的鬼魂是尼古拉斯·德米西·波普頓爵士，人稱「差點沒頭的尼克」。

Slytherin史萊哲林
始創人是Salazar Slytherin，代表著野心勃勃，精明，領導才能及老謀深算。代表顏色是綠色和銀色，對應於水元素，史萊哲林的守護神是蛇。學院的鬼魂是血腥男爵。

Hufflepuff赫夫帕夫
始創人是Helga Hufflepuff，代表著努力、耐心、正義和忠誠。代表顏色是鮮黃色和黑色，對應於土元素。赫夫帕夫的守護神是獾。學院的鬼魂是胖修士。

Ravenclaw雷文克勞
始創人是Rowena Ravenclaw，代表著智慧，創造力，學習和領悟性。代表顏色是藍色和古銅色（電影中是藍色和灰色），對應於風元素，雷文克勞的守護神是老鷹。學院的鬼魂是雷文克勞的女兒海倫娜·雷文克勞（灰衣貴婦）。

隨著大選愈來愈近，與政治相關的新聞也日漸增加。若平常有看 CNN 或 BBC 新聞英語時，也常常會聽到政治相關消息，若讀到歷史相關英語，也免不了談到「戰爭、簽訂條約、侵略」等等詞彙。想聽懂讀懂政治新聞，一定要學會這些單字，一起來學習這些實用用法吧！

sign 簽訂
/
Sign 這個單字除了我們一般會用的「簽名」的意思，還可以當作「簽訂」。「簽訂條約」就是要用這個單字。例如：
/
sign an armistice 簽訂休戰協議
/
sign a truce 簽訂休戰協議
/
sign a ceasefire agreement /deal 簽訂停戰協議
/
And in 1953, once the killing stopped, the U.S., China, and North Korea signed an armistice, a temporary ceasefire.
（1953 年，這場殺戮一結束後，美國、中國和北韓就簽了休戰協議，暫時熄火。）
/
Tonight, Kim Jong-un becomes the first North Korean leader to cross the border since an uneasy truce was signed in 1953.
（今晚，金正恩將成為首位跨過邊界的北韓領導人，是自 1953 年以來簽訂不穩定的休戰協議之後的首例。）

sign an unequal treaty 簽訂不平等條約

中國過去與世界列強曾簽訂了許多不平等條約，例如：
Several unequal treaties were signed between China and Western powers during the 19th century.
（中國在十九世紀時曾與西方勢力簽訂不平等條約。）

sign a peace treaty 簽訂和平條約
/
North and South Korea agreed to sign a peace treaty, hoping to have a peaceful future.
（南北韓同意簽訂和平協議，希冀擁有和平的未來。）

breach / violate 違反、打破
/
條約可以簽訂，當然就可以違反，要表達「『違反』條約」，可以用 breach 或 violate。例如：
/
The president's new law to develop weapons may breach international treaties.
The president's new law to develop weapons may violate international treaties.
（那位總統發展武器的新法律可能會違反國際間的條約。）
/
而如果要表達「違反」規則，可以使用 break 這個字，例如：
/
Andy broke the class rules, so he was punished.
（Andy 違反了班級規則，所以受到懲罰。）
/
※ 小提醒：因為 treaty（條約）是比較正式的單字，因此不會搭配 break 這個動詞，通常會搭配 breach 或 violate喔！
/
