中華大學係由新竹地區熱心教育之企業家，基於落實科技教育、協助地方產業升級、增加地方推廣教育的管道而興辦的，創校宗旨在於響應政府培育高級專門人才，發展科技福國裕民之號召，實現「事業有成，回饋社會」的宏願，於民國七十九年三月正式獲教育部核准創立中華工學院，同年七月參加大學聯招。在董事會的大力支持及全體教職員工、學生的共同努力下，校務發展頗受肯定，並能快速成長茁壯，終奉教育部核准自八十六年八月一日改名中華大學。民國81年12月奉准成立「推廣教育中心」，86年7月升格為推廣教育處，並於台北、台中設立分處。
