In Chinese business culture, gift-giving follows unspoken rules. Miss the ritual, and the signal you send may be the opposite of what you intend.
🎁 The gift-giving ritual that trips up almost every Western executive in China:
You bring a nice gift.
Host says: "No no, you shouldn't have!"
You insist.
Host refuses again.
You panic: "Did I offend them??"
Here's the thing — in Chinese culture, refusing a gift 2-3 times before accepting is EXPECTED. It's called "kè qi" (ritual modesty).
The correct move? Gently insist. Say it's just a small token. Wait for the third exchange.
Same when they offer YOU something — decline politely first, then accept.
Small ritual. Big trust signal. 🤝
