這本值得期待!👍
The latest edition of The Journal of Gemmology (Volume 40, No. 1, 2026) is now available for Gem-A Members to read online 📚
In this issue, we take a closer look at a new type of green opalised wood from the Garut region of West Java, Indonesia, and encounter the first documented occurrence of rose quartz from the Hamedan region of western Iran.
Gem Notes covered in this issue include a CVD-grown diamond showing multiple layering under deep-UV radiation, a rare colour-change Co-bearing gahnite, a pink synthetic sapphire with unusual garnet-like inclusions and atypical bead-cultured freshwater pearls with unusual coin-shaped nuclei.
📸 On the cover, we spotlight an emerging source of Chinese emerald in a tungsten-mining area in Zhen’an County, Shaanxi Province, central China. Emeralds from this locality are described in a feature article on pp. 44–65. The stones shown range from 0.30 to 1.33 ct. Photo by Dr Yu-Yu Zheng.

Unusual fluorescence in a beryllium-treated ruby 🔬
Fluorescence is a fundamental tool in gemmology, offering a rapid method for detecting potential treatments and providing insights into a gem’s composition and formation history.
Recently, the Gübelin Gem Lab examined a 22.28 ct natural ruby displaying an unusual long-wave UV fluorescence pattern: orange with multiple distinct zones of red fluorescence, along with faint chalky whitish fluorescence near the culet. This rare coexistence of three fluorescence colours prompted further investigation.
Writing in The Journal of Gemmology (Volume 39, No. 8), the authors explain why gemmologists should take note of orange fluorescence, especially when combined with the presence of peaks at 3062 and 2490 cm–1 in FTIR spectra, due to its association with Be-related bonds.
