The Festival That Involves Racing, Dumplings, and a Poet. 🐉
June 1st is coming — and Taiwan is about to get loud. 🐉
This is 端午節 Duānwǔ Jié — the Dragon Boat Festival.
Here's the story behind it:
Over 2,000 years ago, a beloved Chinese poet named 屈原 Qū Yuán
threw himself into a river in protest
after his kingdom fell to corruption.
The local people were so devastated,
they raced out in boats to save him —
and threw rice into the water
so the fish wouldn't eat him.
Today, that story lives on in two of Taiwan's most beloved traditions:
🐉 龍舟 Lóng zhōu — Dragon boat racing
(Teams of 20, drumbeats pounding,
racing across the river at full speed)
🎋 粽子 Zòngzi — Rice dumplings
(Sticky rice, pork, egg yolk and mushrooms,
wrapped in bamboo leaves and steamed)
💡 Mandarin Mini-Lesson:
端午節 Duānwǔ Jié — Dragon Boat Festival
粽子 Zòngzi — Rice Dumpling
龍舟 Lóng zhōu — Dragon Boat
包粽子 Bāo zòngzi — To wrap rice dumplings
划龍舟!Huá lóng zhōu!— Row the dragon boat!
---
P.S. This summer, teens in our
2026 Mandarin Explorer Weeks
will wrap their very own zòngzi
in a century-old farmhouse in Taipei. 🎋
Early Bird ends May 17 — Link in bio!

Taiwan's Most Magical Dessert — Made From a Fig? 🍋
It's getting hot in Taipei.
And Taiwanese people have had the solution for centuries. 🍋
Meet 愛玉 Ài yù — Aiyu Jelly.
Here's why it's magic:
It comes from the seeds of a wild fig
found only in Taiwan's mountains.
You rub the seeds in cold water with your bare hands —
搓一搓 Cuō yī cuō —
and within minutes, the water turns into a soft,
golden, wobbly jelly.
No cooking. No artificial anything.
Just a fig, cold water, and your hands.
Serve it with fresh lemon juice and honey,
and you have Taiwan's most refreshing summer dessert.
💡 Mandarin Mini-Lesson:
愛玉 Ài yù — Aiyu Jelly
搓 Cuō — To rub (the seeds)
消暑 Xiāo shǔ — To beat the summer heat
蜂蜜 Fēng mì — Honey
好消暑!Hǎo xiāo shǔ!— So refreshing!

Every summer in Taiwan, one of nature's most impressive creatures emerges from the forest.
Meet the 獨角仙 Dú jiǎo xiān — the Rhinoceros Beetle. 🦌
It's about the size of your thumb.
It has one massive horn on its head.
It can lift 850 times its own body weight
(that's like a human lifting a tank).
And it only comes out at night.
June through August, these incredible beetles
emerge in the mountains near Taipei —
and most people living here have never seen one in the wild.
💡 Mandarin Mini-Lesson:
獨角仙 Dú jiǎo xiān — Rhinoceros Beetle
甲蟲 Jiǎ chóng — Beetle
角 Jiǎo — Horn
牠好大!Tā hǎo dà!— It's so big!
---
🌿 Want to find one yourself?

That 'Woo Woo Woo' Sound at Night in Taipei? We Finally Have Answers.
If you've ever walked through a Taipei park at dusk and heard a low, mysterious 'woo woo woo' coming from the trees - you're not imagining things.
It's not a ghost.
It's not an owl.
It's the 黑冠麻鷺 Hēi guān má lù - the Malayan Night Heron.
And it's basically Taipei's most dramatic resident.
This bird lives in city parks, school gardens, and quiet alleyways all across Taipei. It walks extremely slowly. It stares at you with intense, unblinking eyes. And every spring, the males start calling out at dusk - that iconic 'woo woo woo' - to find a mate.
Spring vocabulary:
黑冠麻鷺 Hēi guān má lù - Malayan Night Heron
聲音 Shēngyīn - Sound
春天 Chūntiān - Spring
找朋友 Zhǎo péngyǒu - Looking for friends(or a date)
Have you heard this sound before? Did you know what it was? Tell us below!
P.S. Want to experience Taipei's summer nature up close? We still have a few spots left for our Nature Night Walk on 5/16.
