Announcing the last member of our adj core—Won Chian Lim

Won Chian Lim had his L.L.B. at Fudan University, as well as his J.D. at Singapore Management University. As one of the best speakers in the Asia debate circuit, he has one of the most amazing CVs. He is the Grandfinalist of numerous international debate tournaments, including 2016 China BP, 2016 Canton IV, 2013 KIDA IV and so much more. It doesn’t stop there. His amazing skills lies not only in his debating CV, but also in how he is able to help other debaters improve significantly as an adjudicator. A full time debate and public speaking trainer, Chian Lim specializes in helping individuals spot their blindspots and improving on their weaknesses. This further demonstrated in his marvelous adjudicating experiences. He was DCA for FLTRP South China Regionals, DCA for NEAO 2013. His astonishing capabilities are beyond words; his long list of CV speaks for itself. Come join our tourney, as we believe having Chian Lim in our adj core as DCA would definitely be an amazing experience for us and our debaters, and we are so proud to have him as our DCA.

To help the newcomers interested in debate, or those trying out debate for the first time at our tournament, here are the motions we had at FDO in 2014

FH-NTU 2014 Motions :

Round 1 : THBT freedom of expression should not be extended to glorification of oppressive history. (e.g. legitimatization of Comfort Women of WWII, N**i Sympathiers, 228 incident, etc.)
Round 2 : THW provide tax breaks to companies that pay their female employees fair wages.
Round 3 : THBT developing nations should divert tertiary education funding to improving primary and secondary education.
Round 4: Assuming there is a technology that can fully eliminate s*xual pleasure and desire, THW grant early release to s*x offenders who consent to this procedure.
Round 5 : THW financially incentivize Marvel to reboot Captain America as gay.
Semi Finals: TH regrets political parties.
Finals : THW use referendum to decide whether to keep or abolish death penalty in Taiwan.

Skyler graduated from Hong Kong University as a bachelor and New York University as a Master, and is about to start her PhD degree in political science at Duke University. She loves to travel & eat (is trying to become a certified chef), and likes to indulge herself in books whenever and wherever. She characterizes herself as one of those snobby people who say often “the book was better than the movie.”
But more importantly, she is an extremely experienced debater and has made some amazing achievements, including being convener of HKDO 2012, Semi-finalist of HKDO 2013, Pre-Quarter Finalist of NEAO 2012 and so much more (just look at her long CV below~)

Here’s a little heads up for the newcomers unfamiliar with Asian Parliamentary format

# of people in the debate: 6
# of people in a team: 3
# of teams in the debate: 2
Duration of the speeches: Constructive and whip speeches 7 minutes, replies 4 minutes
Questions format: Points of information

This debate format is mainly used in the Asia and is also the basics of the World schools debate format.
The speakers speak in the following order:
Prime minister
Leader of opposition
Deputy prime minister
Deputy leader of opposition
Government whip
Opposition whip
Opp. Reply speaker
Gov. Reply speaker

All these speeches are seven minutes long except for reply speeches, which are 4 minutes long. Prime minister presents the case, Leader of opp presents its own arguments and rebuttals the gov’s, Deputy PM has also his own argument(s) and makes some rebuttal, of course he/she should not forget that she has to speak about the arguments of the PM and reaffirm them. Deputy leader of opp has the same task, meaning new argument(s), rebuttal, own previous arguments. The government/opposition whip then summarizes the debater and compares the arguments provided by both sides.
Now follow two reply speeches, first the oppositional and then the governmental reply. The speeches are given by the first or the second speaker from each side. The speeches should focus on the great ideas, arguments, clashes in the debate and present them.

Nana!
A staunch believer of having fun while doing anything, Nana’s open and friendly personality reflects her interests in debate. The sport gives her a chance to see the world and be brave enough to express herself, without being judged by others, something almost all of us have been through.
No, she may not be the most outspoken debater, or the most experienced speaker, or the most bigmouth and kickass judge out there, but she is for sure one of the most dedicated and detailed judges you will ever meet.
Her willingness and devotion to provide meticulous feedback is a vital asset for any aspiring debater, and we are proud to have her as our judge for this tournament.
