World Anthropologies in the Making
Some Reflections from the Nordics
Event Overview:
How might we rethink World Anthropologies from the Nordic region? Drawing on Nordic
ethnography and the practice of “anthropology at home,
” this talk explores how an
insider’s perspective can challenge dominant theoretical assumptions. It also considers how
ethnographic experiences from different regions can contribute to the making of
anthropological theory, creating connections between locally grounded knowledge and
broader conversations in anthropology.
About the Speaker:
Professor Marianne Elisabeth Lien
Department of Social Anthropology, University of Oslo
Professor Marianne Elisabeth Lien has a long-standing interest in the Nordic region and over
four decades of fieldwork experience. Her research spans a wide range of topics and
regions, including land use and land conflicts in Sápmi, aquaculture in Norway and
Tasmania, food and eating practices in Finnmark, northern Norway, as well as the
food industry and marketing. Her work also engages with the interface between
anthropology and Science and Technology Studies (STS), with a sustained interest in the
political, positional, and methodological questions involved in conducting ethnographic
research “close to home.
