Interesting facts about the UK: Bobbies

Only 5% of the police officers in the UK are authorised to carry guns; police officers that carry guns are only usually seen in emergencies or at sensitive areas like airports.

Many English still use the term ‘bobby’ to refer to the local policemen or women. Bobbies are police on patrol (or police on the street) and are traditionally known as being very friendly. They don’t carry guns, but they do wear funny-looking hats.

Interesting facts about the UK: Rural wildlife

Since Bradfield is located in a rural area and surrounded by woods and farmland, our students may encounter some of the following wildlife, so be sure to KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED (keep looking for)

Badger (meaning digger) 獾
With their black and white-striped face and grey fur, the badger looks like no other UK mammal.

Hare 野兔
Much bigger than rabbits. With long ears and long legs, the brown hare is Britain’s fastest land mammal.

Hedgehog 刺猬
With their spiny back, long nose. The hedgehog is probably the UK’s favourite wild mammal.

Fox
Foxes are found across the UK. They are very common because they can survive in almost any habitat.

Red squirrel (shadow tail)紅松鼠
Famed for their bright fur, red squirrels are much smaller than grey squirrels,.

Interesting facts about the UK

Unlike most of the world, people in the UK drive on the left side of the road. That is why you often see reminders (for tourists mainly) painted on the road to look right when crossing the street.

Why do they drive on the left? In fact, most of the world used to do this (when travel was on horseback). Since most people are right handed, when coming into a conflict or fight on the road, it would be easier to pass on the left and fight (with a sword) on the right.

So please be careful when crossing the road.

Interesting facts about the UK: TEA

English people love tea -usually red tea with milk.

The British drink over 163 million cups of tea daily, 20 times more than the number of cups consumed by Americans.

300 years ago, tea was 6 or 7 times more expensive than coffee and only consumed by richer people.

Since English people drink so much tea, sugar is not usually added (也不用加珍珠)
