The Graduate Institute of Life Sciences(GILS) is the graduate school co-sponsored by National Defense Medical Center, Academia Sinica and National Health Research Institutes, with purpose to cultivate and train able candidates of Life Sciences and promote development and study of Life Sciences。
The establishment of the Institute was approved by both Ministry of Education and Ministry of National
Defense in November 1991; the first group of postgraduates was recruited in 1992. Currently there are three subject groups: Group of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Group of Systematic Biology, Group of Sociobiology, Group of Biotechnology and Biochemistry. Eligible postgraduates applying for the Institute must be already endowed with Master's Degree from their home universities [accredited by Ministry of Education], or from foreign universities and graduate divisions of private colleges [also accredited by Ministry of Education]. Starting with the very first semester in 1996, the institute has enrolled students with eligible qualification to apply for the doctor degree, in full accordance with the “Standards for Recognition of Equivalent Qualifications for University Entrance Examination”.
