接續前一堂課的內容，四月底，VIS 10 年級學生在國立臺灣大學實驗室學習聚合酶連鎖反應（Polymerase Chain Reaction，簡稱 PCR）與凝膠電泳（Gel Electrophoresis）等重要生物科技技術，並了解如何應用它來分析遺傳變異。透過實作與觀察，學生在學習到科學家是如何用這些技術來預測與檢測遺傳疾病之餘，也理解現代醫學與人類遺傳學背後的科學原理。

藉著大學實驗室課程，VIS 學生得以提早接觸專業研究環境，理解科學如何在現實世界中發揮影響力，為未來進入醫學、生命科學與相關領域奠定堅實基礎。

📖 以下為十年級學生 Joanne Lin 的實驗心得：

During our most recent class on April 27th, we received the results of our DNA analyses from previous classes, where we had begun the process of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to amplify DNA. The analysis included a printed DNA sequence showing our results, and a physical DNA sample.

At the start of class, we were first introduced to the concept of mutation and its relation to alcohol metabolism. We learned that variations in the ALDH2 gene determine how fast acetaldehyde, a toxic intermediate produced during alcohol breakdown, is converted to acetate, a non-toxic substance. The ALDH21 allele, which encodes a largely active enzyme, is associated with higher alcohol tolerance due to how fast acetaldehyde is converted. In contrast, another allele, ALDH22, encodes an inactive enzyme. This causes a toxic accumulation of acetaldehyde that leads to severe nausea and flushing, commonly known as the "Asian Flush" as it is most prevalent among East Asian populations. By the end of class, we were guided to identify a specific segment of our DNA and determine which variation we carried.

Before that, we learned how to use a micropipette, an essential laboratory tool that requires precision and careful handling to transfer and measure very small volumes of liquid, typically less than 1 ml. We took turns using micropipettes to load our DNA samples into the wells of the agarose gel that we had prepared in previous classes. We then performed gel electrophoresis by applying an electric current across the gel, allowing DNA fragments to separate by size and charge, with smaller fragments traveling farther through the gel.

Overall, from the cumulative learning from recent classes and this class, I gained a deeper appreciation for laboratory techniques such as PCR and gel electrophoresis in analyzing genetic variation, which can help to predict and detect harmful genetic diseases, as well as better understand human genetics in general. This was a highly engaging lab that taught me many new concepts while also strengthening important teamwork during sample loading and precision to ensure accurate results.

#義光教會 #在地學習 #歷史教育 #人權議題 #走出教室

上個月底，VIS Discover Taipei 社團前往 #大安森林公園 與 #義光教會導覽。這次全程由學生擔任講者，帶領聽眾回顧解嚴前臺灣的社會變遷。導覽中，學生輪流介紹多項歷史事件，包括臺美斷交、開放兩岸探親以及林宅血案等。藉由清晰脈絡與生動敘事，臺灣走向民主化的歷程得以在聽眾面前重現。

走進教堂，學生用情境式導覽，引領觀眾重返那段壓抑的時代，讓大家感受事件原委。活動最後，大家圍坐交流，分享身為臺灣人，如何從這段歷史中反思身份認同與時代責任。

VIS 一向鼓勵學生走出教室，藉由社團提升課外知識，增進表達能力，及開拓生活視野。

Last month, the VIS Discover Taipei Club visited Daan Park and Gikong Presbyterian Church for a student-led guided tour. Students served as the presenters throughout the tour, leading our participants through Taiwan's social transformations up until the lifting of martial law. During the tour, students took turns introducing major historical events, including the severing of diplomatic ties between Taiwan and the United States, the opening of cross-strait family visits, and the Lin family murders. The clear historical context given by our students bought the audience back to Taiwan's journey toward democratization.

Inside the church, students used immersive and scenario-based narration to guide participants back into that era of political suppression, helping them better understand the events and their historical significance. At the end of the activity, everyone gathered for discussion, reflecting on what it means to be Taiwanese and how this period of history shapes identity and a sense of responsibility today.

At VIS, we consistently encourage students to step beyond the classroom, using clubs and extracurricular activities to expand their knowledge, strengthen communication skills, and broaden their perspectives on the world around them.

這次我們導覽的主題是介紹一段因電影拍攝而再次受到關注的林家歷史事件。我們從課堂與書本中的知識出發，實地走訪了義光教會，親身感受這個充滿歷史意義的地方。義光教會由林義雄先生的舊家改建而成，不僅保留了過去的記憶，也成為傳遞關懷與人文精神的重要場域。在這次的學習過程中，我們進一步認識了臺灣過去的重要歷史背景，包括白色恐怖、美麗島事件以及中華民國與美國斷交等事件。這些歷史讓我們更理解社會發展的過程，也幫助我們從不同角度看待過去。透過這次的參訪與整理，我們不僅加深了對歷史的認識，也培養了以理性與多元觀點思考問題的能力，並更加珍惜當今穩定與安全的生活環境。

#論文寫作 #社會經濟學

Dr. Bianchi-Pennington 的 Science and Research Writing Course 課程中，學生用了一整年閱讀學術論文，並比照練習，從研究做起，到最後自選研究主題。G11 Bryan Lee 一直以來對社會經濟學與人工智慧興致盎然，遂將其作為研究方向。他先完成詳盡的文獻回顧，再撰寫摘要、研究方法與正文；經迭同儕與授課教師回饋後定稿。

而今年五月初，Bryan 投稿的論文獲美國國際高中生研究期刊平臺（National High School Journal of Science，簡稱 NHSJS）錄取，並已正式刊登於網站上 📰。

論文大綱：
當代全球毒品濫用議題日益複雜。基於這樣的時空背景，Bryan 由跨領域視角切入，發表名為〈Evaluating the Influence of Socioeconomic Factors on Drug Abuse Through an AI-Driven Scale〉的研究，旨在重新思考社會結構與個人行為之間的關聯。

本研究結合五項關鍵社會經濟因素：貧富差距、教育程度、同儕影響、社會連結，以及心理健康，並進一步導入人工智慧模型，建立一套統一評估框架。Bryan 藉由「急迫性（Urgency）」、「影響範圍（Reach）」與「持續性（Recurrence）」三大指標，量化不同因素對毒品濫用的影響程度，分析原本難以比較的社會議題。

研究結果指出，心理健康高度影響多項指標，顯示其在毒品濫用問題中的核心地位；而貧富差距與同儕因素也不容小覷。此發現呼應既有學術研究，同時也藉由 AI 技術提供嶄新的整合視角。

撰寫論文，固然是一件繁難的工作。VIS 學生展現出非凡科研能力；完成論文全賴學生不懈努力、精益求精、自得自證，面對全球挑戰時，能具備批判思考能力與問題解決視野。

VIS 國際實驗教育將印太戰略與全球領導力帶入真實學習現場、40 年來美軍訪台最高將領史都德曼談「領導力」

在全球局勢快速變動、印太地緣政治持續重塑的時代，教育不僅是知識傳授，更是培養判斷力、國際理解與未來領導力的關鍵場域。有理文化（Uli Books）與 VIS 國際實驗教育共同舉辦國際級講座，邀請《最強環節》作者、前美軍印太司令部聯二（J2）情報指揮官、退役海軍少將史都德曼（Mike Studeman）親臨臺北，帶來其在國際安全、情報分析與印太戰略上的第一線觀察。

本次活動中，VIS 九年級學生 Dulcy Chen 擔任雙語主持並協助讀者簽書環節時的翻譯任務，稱職的主持讓現場來賓驚嘆她才九年級15歲，VIS 九年級 Alexander Cheng 和十年級 Morris Huang 參與現場英語提問，直接與國際級講者對話。這不僅展現學生的語言能力與思辨素養，也體現 VIS「將學習帶入真實世界」的教育精神。透過與全球議題的近距離接觸，學生得以將課堂所學轉化為理解世界、參與世界的能力。另外還有七位同學 Melson Lee、Esme Kuan、Yancey Shen、Ann Hsiao、Emerald Shih、Jacky Ma、Sherry Lin 擔任現場接待志工並與史都德曼將軍互動。

本場講座聚焦中國崛起、北韓局勢、俄羅斯擴張及人工智慧浪潮下的全球安全挑戰，並進一步探討領導者如何在高度不確定與壓力環境中做出關鍵判斷、維持誠信，並凝聚團隊面對複雜局勢。

活動亦特別邀請前海軍司令部副參謀長王國強備役少將擔任與談人，從台美情報合作與印太安全的第一線視角展開對話，帶領與會者理解當前印太局勢的多重面向。

✨ VIS 學生 G10 Tommy Chen 參加國內外機器人大賽屢次榮獲冠軍、亞軍等佳績。為表彰臺北市學生於國際競賽中表現卓然，上週三 Tommy 受邀前往臺北市政府，由 #臺北市市長 與張文潔議員親自接見。

Tommy 在寒假期間赴韓國參與 2026 RCJ Open Soccer Infrared 國際賽事。RoboCup Junior（RCJ）始於 1997 年創立的 RoboCup 計畫，並於 2000 年設立青少年組別，迄今已遍及全球四十多國。

RCJ 著重專題導向學習（PBL）、跨域整合、創新實踐精神等，體現新世代教育之核心價值。RCJ 所屬的 RoboCupJunior Soccer 是全球赫赫有名的教育型機器人競賽，參賽學生須親手構建機器人、編寫程式，使其於賽場上自行運作、協同攻防。這項競技既鍛鍊科技應用，也淬鍊團隊合作與戰略思維。

誠摯恭喜 Tommy 憑優異表現，在眾人中鶴立雞群，令 VIS 全體與有榮焉。我們也期待 Tommy 未來能在真實世界將所學運用在醫療、長照、急難救助等領域。

✨ VIS Grade 10 student Tommy Chen has achieved outstanding results in both domestic and international robotics competitions, earning multiple championship and runner-up titles. In recognition of his exceptional performance on the global stage, Tommy was invited last Wednesday to the Taipei City Government, where he was received by the Mayor of Taipei and city council members.

During the winter break, Tommy traveled to South Korea to compete in the 2026 RCJ Open Soccer Infrared international competition. RoboCup Junior (RCJ) originated from the RoboCup initiative established in 1997, with its youth division launched in 2000. Today, it spans more than 40 countries worldwide.

RCJ emphasizes project-based learning (PBL), interdisciplinary integration, and a spirit of innovation. These are core values that define education for the next generation. One of its flagship events, RoboCupJunior Soccer, is a globally renowned educational robotics competition in which students design and build their own robots, program them, and enable autonomous teamwork on the field. The competition not only advances technical skills but also cultivates collaboration, strategic thinking, and real-world problem-solving.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Tommy for his remarkable achievements, which have brought great pride to the entire VIS community. We look forward to seeing him apply his skills in the real world, whether in healthcare or other related fields, making a meaningful impact on society.

The VIS Robotics Club competed in the 2025–2026 FIRST Robot Competition Taiwan Qualifiers, earning the a finalist award. In recognition of their outstanding performance, the Kaohsiung City Government presented the team with a certificate of commendation.

The 2025–2026 FIRST Robotics Competition Taiwan Qualifiers is one of the most anticipated annual events for many young innovators. This year's competition, held at the National Science and Technology Museum in Kaohsiung, centered on the theme UNEARTHED™, inspiring participants to explore and uncover the past. The event brought together nearly 200 teams from across Taiwan. Beyond advancing technical skills, the FIRST competition allows students to develop essential competencies such as project-based learning, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

#人類遺傳學 #核型 #臺大實驗室 #科學實驗

上週 VIS 10 年級學生在國立臺灣大學實驗室深入了解人類遺傳學，並重點學習染色體在人體中的作用及其影響。接著，學生在實驗階段用電腦分析了一位患者的核型（karyotype），識別出任何異常，並診斷出病情。

藉著大學實驗室課程，VIS 學生得以提早接觸專業研究環境，理解科學如何在現實世界中發揮影響力，為未來進入醫學、生命科學與相關領域奠定堅實基礎。

以下是十年級學生 Justice Liang 的實驗心得：

After focusing on genotyping last week, we moved on to human genetics this week, with a particular emphasis on the role of chromosomes in the human body and the traits they influence. To deepen our understanding, we engaged in several activities that helped us better grasp both the structure and function of chromosomes.

The first activity involved constructing a human karyotype by correctly pairing a complete set of chromosomes. After matching all the chromosomes, we determined whether the karyotype belonged to a male or a female. This exercise provided a valuable hands-on complement to the lecture, allowing us to apply what we had learned in a more concrete way.

In the next activity, we analyzed a patient’s karyotype, identified any abnormalities, and diagnosed the condition. We then justified our conclusion by explaining how the chromosomal abnormality led to the observed syndrome and its associated effects.

Through this lesson, I developed a deeper understanding of what chromosomes are and how significantly they can affect a person. I learned how chromosomes pair and what causes various health complications when errors occur during cell division. Overall, these activities were far more helpful than simply listening to lectures or taking notes, as the hands-on experience improved my ability to retain what I learned in this class.

#升學規劃 #升學講座 #大學申請

今年四月，VIS 廣邀多位講者蒞臨交流，橫跨線上 Info Session、PBL 課程與 Life Design 課程。藉此機會，學生得以審視自身升學方向，也在耳濡目染中累積經驗，為未來學術發展厚植根基。

4 月 9 日
來自 High Tech High 的 Michael 來訪 VIS，與 PBL 師生共同交流 PBL 教學理念。他與多位學生對談，對學生展現出的熱忱與自主學習能動性印象深刻，讚譽有加。

4 月 20 日
於 G11 Life Design 課程中，VIS 邀請 9 位來自不同領域的專業人士進行深度交流。每場次為 30 分鐘，先由講者進行 10 至 15 分鐘的職涯歷程與現職分享，隨後開放 10 至 15 分鐘問答，與學生面對面交流、即時解惑。

本次來訪陣容可謂群英薈萃。在科技與工程領域，學生向電腦工程師 Dan Engel 學習。來自商業與顧問領域，KPMG（Advisory）合夥人 Vincent Chang 分享策略決策的見解。

在創意與設計領域方面，玩具設計師 Phil So，以及媒體與敘事領域的記者兼作家 Chris Horton，皆帶來相關經驗分享。學生也透過非營利智庫研究總監 Caroline Fried，探索以使命為導向的職涯，並從中央研究院生命科學研究員，同時也是 VIS 學生家長的 Paul Versules，了解科學研究領域。

此外，心理學家 Holly Mak 介紹了心理健康與人類行為領域，並引發關於身心福祉與職涯契合的深入討論。

4 月 29 日
來自匹茲堡大學的 Ivy 幫助學生了解什麼是大學論文、如何建構論文結構，以及各大學希望在學生論文中看到什麼。

在此特別感謝所有來賓傾囊相授、見解精闢，協助 VIS 學生邁向更明確而踏實的高等教育之路。🌍🎓

This April, we were honored to invite multiple guest speakers to VIS, including those in our info sessions online, PBL course, and Life Design course. Students could explore their college options, gain valuable experience, and lay the foundation for their academic path.

🗓️April 9th:
Michael from High Tech High toured VIS and co-shared ideas about PBL. He talked to several students, and was impressed by their enthusiastism and with students agency.

🗓️April 20th:
As a part of our G11 Life Design Class, VIS invited 9 different professionals to come to have 30-minute sessions with students. IDuring these sessions, we asked the professional mentors to make 10-15 minute presentations about their career path and current job, then engage in 10-15 minutes of Q&A with our students.

This year’s mentor cohort reflected the diversity of the day’s professional landscape. In the fields of technology and engineering, students learned from Dan Engel, a computer engineer. Coming from the world of business and consulting, Vincent Chang, Partner at KPMG (Advisory), offered insights into strategic decision-making.

Creative and design-oriented careers were represented by Phil So, a toy designer, alongside voices in media and storytelling such as Chris Horton, journalist and author. Students also explored purpose-driven careers through Caroline Fried, Director of Research at a non-profit think tank, and gained exposure to scientific research through Paul Versules, a life sciences researcher at Academia Sinica and a VIS parent.

Rounding out the program, Holly Mak, a psychologist, introduced students to the field of mental health and human behavior, prompting thoughtful discussions around well-being and career alignment.
