Acquiring the English language as a tool to learn academically requires the same method as the first language — intensive reading. Sustained reading not only builds vocabulary and sentence structure, but also an intuitive understanding for word order, collocations, and tone variations, thereby smoothly transforming “fragmented knowledge” into “holistic thinking ability.” Intensively reading in English prepares the student for independently learning and thinking critically on new content as they are faced with it.
Since the founding of the Dazhi classroom in 2006, we have dedicated 19 years to English reading in various forms — fiction, non-fiction, news, comics, and graphic novels — in order to help build an interest in English. Instead of learning English, we use English to learn.
