Hey! Sunday - Life with BaiBai

Once a year, I get to see Ellery in person, and every time, she is just as thoughtful as ever—always remembering the little things I love.

As she grows older, our conversations grow wider and deeper too. It’s such a beautiful feeling to watch her grow, not only as a student, but as a person.

A heartfelt thank you to Nina and her family for always making space for me in their lives. Even though our Chinese lessons happen online every week, no matter where they travel, they somehow always “take me along” with them. ✈️🌍

This summer, I was especially happy to spend a little time together with the whole family and Ellery’s classmates—enjoying a short but memorable get-together and a fun field trip outside the classroom.

Distance may keep us apart most of the time, but somehow, learning, friendship, and connection always bring us back together.

Hey! Sunday - Life with BaiBai

This time, we’re skipping the supermarket and going on a little treasure hunt at a traditional Taiwanese market! 🥬🍅✨

What can we learn here?

We can hear authentic local accents, touch and explore fresh fruits and vegetables, and meet the warm-hearted aunties and uncles who bring the market to life.

Thank you, Jixing and Kunyou, for your courage and curiosity—you did an amazing job!

And a big thank you to Emma and her family for organizing this special experience and making this summer vacation one to remember!

Hey! Tuesday- Life with BaiBai

There is a kind of love that is built on joy and trust. Over the years of learning Chinese with Kanani, that love has only grown stronger and more certain.

In all these years, she has never missed a single lesson. Whether it’s our 7:30 a.m. class on Wednesday or a Friday evening session, she always shows up on time. What touches me even more is that every lesson requires more than two hours of travel, yet she still arrives prepared, with every assignment completed. Her dedication and perseverance have inspired me more than words can say.

Learning Chinese together has become so much more than studying a language. We’ve witnessed each other’s growth, shared everyday moments, and celebrated life’s milestones. It’s a journey that has been both meaningful and deeply joyful.

And now, there’s a little miracle growing day by day.

I wonder… can this sweet baby already hear our conversations in Chinese? 💛

I can’t wait to welcome this little one into our world.

Hey! Tuesday- Life with BaiBai

When I think of Allie, the first words that come to mind are independent-minded and visionary.

Every time we practice Chinese together, I feel as if there’s a quiet light shining behind her—guiding her and illuminating the path she walks. She has a presence that naturally inspires the people around her.

She also reminds me of my very first year as a Chinese teacher, when I was still discovering what it truly meant to connect with people through language.

As a debate teacher, Allie has given me the opportunity to see our world through different languages, cultures, and faiths. Our conversations have gone far beyond vocabulary and grammar. They’ve reminded me that language learning isn’t just about communication—it’s about understanding different perspectives while sharing our own.

Thank you, Allie, for every thoughtful conversation. They’ve made me a better teacher, and more importantly, a more open-minded person 🤍

What do you love investing in?

For me, it’s board games and Chinese flashcards.

Every time I discover a new game, my mind immediately starts wondering, “How can I bring this into my lessons?” Sometimes I think there are only a handful of ways to play it—but then my students surprise me with ideas I would have never imagined. They always find a way to think outside the box.

Learning Chinese isn’t just about learning a new language. It’s also about learning to break free from familiar ways of thinking, seeing the world from different perspectives, and interpreting ideas with creativity.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned from Hilda and her family is how to approach life with curiosity, positivity, and a great sense of humor.

I’ve been their Chinese teacher for over three years now, and every class continues to surprise me in the best way. There’s always something new to laugh about, learn from, or reflect on.

I’m truly grateful for this special connection and for the opportunity to witness the growth and progress of all three children over the years. Watching them learn, explore, and become more confident has been such a rewarding journey.
