[English below]
Nathan,
[English]
Nathan grew up in a mountain village in Tanzania. Because his family had nothing, he walked barefoot everywhere — each night, his father used a needle to remove parasites from his feet. A single piece of sweet potato and unfiltered water was all he had to get through each day.
Jane Goodall saw his talent and determination, and sponsored his journey to Taiwan. Today, he holds a PhD from National Taiwan University (NTU), and saves half his monthly stipend to fund the education of five children back home.
On graduation day, he addressed the crowd in fluent Mandarin:
"If my education cannot help others, then it has no value."
--------------------------
Taiwan's own Megan Teng fell in love with spacecraft from watching Star Wars, and decided to double major in International Business and Mechanical Engineering at NTU — then crossed the Pacific to earn her doctorate at UC Berkeley's College of Engineering. In the lab, building smart sensors, she always pictured her 96-year-old grandmother.
On graduation day, she spoke for the entire PhD class:
"Engineers have the power to shape civilization — but that power must be grounded in empathy for real people. We are Berkeley Engineers. We have the strength to build, the hearts to care, and we are the ones who bring the light."
--------------------------
Crossing disciplines. Refusing to be defined. Taking a path no one else has walked.
This isn't exceptional. It's a capacity that can be developed.
Two completely different starting points. One shared conviction:
The people who go the furthest carry more than knowledge — they carry people with them.
Top universities aren't just looking for high scores.
They're looking for someone with a story, a direction, and the clarity to know why they learn.
That's what Trinity Scholar helps students discover.

有些單位重視真正的學術探索與研究能力培養;

More high school students are getting involved in academic research, but not all research programs offer the same level of academic value.
Academic research during high school has become increasingly common.
But with so many research programs now available, how can students and families tell which ones are truly worth joining?
Some programs focus on genuine academic exploration and research training. Others place heavier emphasis on publication outcomes, résumé packaging, or even “guaranteed publication” claims.
So how can students and families evaluate whether a high school research program offers real academic value?
Here are four things worth paying attention to:
• Whether the program has a rigorous academic structure and credible third-party accreditation
• Whether students take ownership of key parts of the research process, from developing research questions to writing
• Whether mentorship is ongoing, interactive, and intellectually engaging
• Whether the experience helps students further explore their genuine academic interests
A valuable research experience is not about chasing famous professors or simply asking whether a paper gets published.
What matters more is whether students genuinely learn how to think, analyze, discuss ideas, and explore complex questions — while experiencing a rigorous and meaningful academic journey.

🏆 【Lessons from the 2026 International Booker Prize: The Power of Storytelling in the Age of AI】
(English follows)
------------------------------------
This week, Taiwan's literary world made history! Author Yáng Shuāng-zǐ (楊双子) and translator Lin King (金翎) have won the prestigious 2026 International Booker Prize for Taiwan Travelogue (《臺灣漫遊錄》). Short yet profoundly moving, their acceptance speeches in London leave us with so much to reflect on. As educators, it challenges us to rethink how we teach language, technology, and expression to the next generation.
In her speech, King shared a wonderfully witty metaphor about orange juice labels. She noted that in the US, labels are strictly factual: "with pulp" or "no pulp." But in the UK, they favor a much more sensory description: "with juicy bits" or "smooth." She expressed her hope that we can view writing and communication not just as "pulp"—the standard delivery of facts—but as those vibrant, sensory "juicy bits" that carry soul, texture, and life.
💡 This distinction perfectly captures how we should approach writing and language in the age of AI.
Modern AI tools are exceptionally powerful at generating grammatically polished and seamless sentences. However, if a writer blindly accepts whatever the machine spits out, the final text remains flat—merely stating facts, like a "with/no pulp" label. AI is a phenomenal sparring partner for optimizing draft text. But to inject those vibrant, burst-in-your-mouth "Juicy Bits," the writer must bring their own foundation of storytelling, critical thinking, and human soul to the dialogue.
As Yang beautifully put it:
"I believe in literature's power because in the life of the mind, literature has never ceded ground or given up on the dialogue between people."
In today’s tech-driven era, while a strong focus on STEM is vital for innovation, the monumental success of Taiwan Travelogue reminds us that we must not neglect the arts. A deep foundation in the humanities is what allows us to build cross-border bridges and exert true global influence.
Technology drives our progress, but humanity defines our stories. Huge congratulations to Yang and King for bringing Taiwan's voice to the world, and for reminding us of the irreplaceable value of a well-rounded, balanced education!

With AI accelerating change across industries, the future is evolving faster than ever before.
In recent years, we’ve also seen more families encouraging students to explore different fields and learning opportunities earlier — sometimes starting in high school, or even before.
Career exploration at an earlier age doesn’t necessarily mean students need to decide on a future profession immediately.
More importantly, it gives students opportunities to gradually understand themselves better:
what they enjoy,
what they are passionate about,
and what kinds of paths they may want to pursue in the future.

As AI becomes part of everyday learning, colleges may increasingly value students who can think independently, communicate clearly, and engage more deeply with ideas.

(Reading)
(Math)
—
With short-form content becoming the norm, what happens when academic reading gets longer and more demanding?
Based on the 2024 NAEP results (released in 2025), U.S. high school students continue to show declines in reading and math.
• Reading scores are at their lowest since 1992, with about 32% below basic
• Math scores are at their lowest since 2005, with about 45% below basic
• Around one-third of students are prepared for college-level math
The trend has lasted over a decade, with contributing factors including reduced long-form reading, fragmented learning, shorter attention spans, and increased absenteeism.
These patterns connect closely with the demands students face in middle and high school, where sustained reading, structured thinking, and focus are increasingly important.
