10 Lessons from Observing EMI Teachers in Training

Summary:

After observing and analysing lessons across the programme, four broad themes emerged:

Make instructions visible
Make students do more of the thinking
Increase interaction
Scaffold more effectively

These themes appeared repeatedly across teachers, subjects, and contexts.
They also align closely with what research consistently tells us about effective teaching.

Developing as a teacher is rarely about finding a single new technique. More often, it involves making small improvements in the areas that matter most.

Every campus has its own story.

The Focus & Vision: Capturing Campus Life Photography Competition brought together more than 200 submissions from students across Taiwan, each sharing a unique perspective through photography and English.

Lesson 10: Good Lessons Need Time to Breathe

A final theme emerging from several observations was lesson pacing.
Teachers often underestimate the time required for:
Discussion
Reflection
Reading
Group work
Feedback
When activities feel rushed, students may complete tasks without fully processing their learning.
Sometimes teaching less allows students to learn more.

Research connection: Effective lesson design requires careful management of cognitive load and processing time (Sweller, Ayres, & Kalyuga, 2011).

Lesson 9: Learning Doesn't End When the Task Ends
The feedback and reflection stage is often overlooked.
Yet this is where important learning can occur.
Consider asking:
What did you learn today?
What surprised you?
What was difficult?
What would you do differently next time?
Reflection helps students consolidate learning and become more aware of their own thinking.

Research connection: Reflection and formative feedback support learning and achievement (Black & Wiliam, 1998; Hattie, 2009).
