What comes alive in Taipei after dark? 🌙✨

Join us on the Tianmu Historic Trail to explore Taipei’s wild side after sunset. We’ll search for frogs, insects, reptiles, mammals, and other nocturnal creatures while learning to identify species and discover fascinating adaptations — from camouflage and mandibles to surprisingly long toes.

We’ll learn to identify mysterious calls, use UV lights to uncover hidden bioluminescence, and meet many of the species we encounter up close. Along the way, we’ll learn how to interact with wildlife respectfully and when it’s best to simply observe, while getting a glimpse into the relationships and competition that shape the ecosystem.

Recent sightings include: civets, snakes, frogs, stag beetles, geckos, japaluras, bats, stick insects, and millipedes.

台北的夜晚，究竟有哪些生物正在悄悄活動？🐍🦇🐸✨

一起走進天母古道，探索台北夜晚的野生世界！我們會尋找蛙類、昆蟲、爬蟲類、哺乳動物等夜行生物，學習辨認物種，也觀察牠們為了生存而演化出的有趣特徵——從保護色、特殊的口器，到令人驚訝的長腳趾。

我們會學習辨認夜裡神秘的叫聲、用 UV 燈尋找隱藏的生物螢光，也會近距離認識許多遇到的生物。同時學習如何尊重地與野生動物互動、什麼時候適合觀察而不打擾，並一窺不同物種之間的互動與競爭，以及牠們在生態系中的角色。

近期觀察到的生物包括：麝香貓、蛇、蛙類、鍬形蟲、壁虎、攀蜥、蝙蝠、竹節蟲和馬陸等。

(English👇) 最近的一場 Night Discovery Walk 夜間探索活動，帶來了一個意外的驚喜——我們竟然在樹上發現了一條台灣小頭蛇 (Oligodon formosanus)！

一開始我還想說，嗯……那隻馬陸（那天晚上真的超多）怎麼看起來有點細……又有點長……等等！是蛇！😂

能在都市步道上意外遇到這種比較少見的蛇類，真的特別令人興奮。我們還看到幾隻白鼻心，以及一隻正在享用成熟無花果的鍬形蟲。

這一晚總共發現了 4 種蛙類和蟾蜍、漂亮的紫色螃蟹、可愛的壁虎、Japaluras（樹蜥）、竹節蟲、長角甲蟲，以及許多其他有趣的小生物。

夜晚的森林，有著和白天完全不同的樣貌。

我們不只是用眼睛找生物，也會放慢腳步，聽聽周遭的聲音。從蛙鳴、蟲聲，到各種動物不同的叫聲，慢慢學著認識這些夜晚才活躍的生物。

有時候，還沒看到牠們，就先聽見了牠們的聲音。跟著聲音尋找，最後發現原來就在不遠處，這也是夜間探索很有趣的地方。🔦🌿

夜間探索總是有機會遇到意想不到的驚喜！🌙

A recent Night Discovery Walk brought quite a surprise — a Taiwan kukri snake in a tree!

At first I thought, hmm, that millipede (and there were so many that night) looks a bit thin... and long... wait! That’s a snake! 😂

It was especially exciting to find this less common species unexpectedly along an urban trail. We also spotted a couple of masked palm civets and a stag beetle enjoying the ripening figs.

All in all, we found 4 species of frogs and toads, beautiful purple crabs, cute geckos, japaluras (tree lizards), stick insects, longhorn beetles, and plenty of other fascinating little creatures.

Along the way, we also learned about invasive species and how they can affect habitats and native wildlife.

Nighttime brings a whole different side of the forest to life.

We don’t just use our eyes to look for wildlife. We slow down and listen to what’s happening around us, learning to recognize frogs, insects, and other animals by their calls.

Sometimes we hear something before we see it, then follow the sound and discover that the animal was hiding just a few steps away. That’s part of the fun of exploring at night. 🔦🌿

There’s always something unexpected to discover on a night walk! 🌙

（English 👇）昨天，我們的泥巴廚房熱鬧開張！🍳🌿

孩子們忙著攪拌、舀取、塑形、過篩，甚至拿著滴管，創作出一道道想像中的泥巴料理。

看起來只是玩泥巴，但其實還有很多事情正在發生。

一次次的舀、捏、攪拌和滴落，讓孩子們自然練習精細動作與手眼協調；一起做料理、分享材料，也需要溝通、合作，還有一點點協商。

而泥巴最有趣的地方之一，就是它不會完全按照你的計畫來。

有時候太濕。

有時候太乾。

有時候腦中想像的配方，實際混合起來就是不太一樣。

這時候，孩子們就需要觀察、調整、嘗試，想想接下來可以怎麼做。

這些看似小小的變化，其實提供了練習適應與面對不確定性的機會。當孩子一次次發現自己可以換個方法、處理意料之外的情況，也正在慢慢建立面對未知的信心與韌性。

而美好的地方就在於，這一切都自然地發生在遊戲之中。

我們也有時間認識公園裡的其他居民：可愛的小蜘蛛、正在築巢的蒼鷺、悠游水中的紅冠水雞，還有一隻開心吃著青草的烏龜。🐢

Yesterday, our mud kitchen was in full swing! 🍳🌿

The kids were busy mixing, scooping, shaping, sifting, and even using droppers to create their own imaginary mud dishes.

It might look like they were simply playing in the mud, but there was actually a lot happening.

Every scoop, squeeze, stir, and careful drop gave them natural opportunities to practice fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Creating their mud dishes together also meant communicating, sharing materials, negotiating, and figuring things out together.

And one of the best things about mud is that it doesn’t always behave the way you expect it to.

Sometimes it’s too wet.

Sometimes it’s too dry.

Sometimes the recipe you imagined in your head turns out completely differently once you actually mix it together.

So children have to observe, adjust, experiment, and figure out what to try next.

These little moments give children opportunities to practice adapting to uncertainty. As they discover that they can change their approach and respond when things don’t go as expected, they are also building confidence and resilience.

And the beautiful thing is that all of this happens naturally through play.

We also had time to meet some of the park’s other residents—from cute little spiders and nesting egrets to swimming Eurasian moorhens and even a turtle happily munching on grass. 🐢

(English 👇) 🌿 幫助人們與自然建立連結的同時，我也很喜歡自己一路上所建立起來的這些連結。

我很喜歡收到以前學生的訊息，跟我分享他們最近的自然探索，即使我們現在已經相隔了半個地球。🌎

最近，一位曾經和我一起參加過許多自然探索活動的學生搬到了加州，我開始陸續收到她分享的消息，告訴我她家後院出現的蜥蜴和蜂鳥。我之前鼓勵她開始寫自然觀察日誌，記錄自己看到的東西，而看到她真的持續做下去，一天一天成為更懂得觀察自然的 naturalist，我真的很為她感到驕傲。🦎

能夠參與她一路上的這段旅程，是一件很特別的事。而且我也可以跟著她學習一些我在美國東岸長大時不曾接觸過的物種！

最近我也收到另一位曾參加過我的自然攝影健行活動的學生傳來的照片，分享他去紐西蘭旅行時發現的野生動物。看到他越來越能發現、觀察並捕捉自然世界中的細節，我也非常開心。📸

就在昨天，另一個本身非常喜歡賞鳥的家庭，也分享了他們最近在波蘭旅行時拍到的一些精彩照片。他們甚至還參與了當地的鳥類繫放志工活動。（好啦，我承認這個真的讓我有點羨慕！😄）

這些一路延續下去的連結，是我最喜歡自己工作的其中一部分。❤️

所以，如果你哪天發現了什麼有趣的東西，請一定要傳給我看！我真的會超級開心，而且它絕對會讓我的一天變得更美好。

🌿 One of my favorite parts of helping people connect with nature is the connection I get to build along the way, too.

One thing I absolutely love is receiving messages and updates from former students about their nature adventures, even from the other side of the world. 🌎

Recently, one of my students who joined me on many nature adventures moved to California, and I’ve been getting regular updates about the lizards and hummingbirds visiting her backyard. I encouraged her to start keeping a nature journal to record her observations, and I’m so proud to see her following through and becoming more of a naturalist every day. 🦎

It’s pretty special to be part of that journey, and I get to learn a little too, about species I didn’t grow up with on the East Coast!

I also recently received photos from a student who joined one of my nature photography hikes, showing me some of the wildlife he spotted during his trip to New Zealand. I’m so proud to see him developing his eye for noticing and capturing the natural world. 📸

And just yesterday, another family who are avid birders shared some amazing photos from their recent adventure in Poland, where they volunteered to help band birds. (Okay, I’m a little jealous of that one! 😄)

These connections are one of the things I love most about what I do. ❤️

So please know that if you find something cool, I would absolutely LOVE to see it! It genuinely makes my day.

(English 👇) 孩子在有時間、有空間自己探索大自然時，會學到什麼？🌿

他們開始觀察、開始提問，也開始發現事物之間的連結。

看到一隻青蛙，可以聊聊牠為什麼長成這個樣子；一堆石頭，可以變成一個工程挑戰；發現一隻小蟲，可能帶來更多問題；一根樹枝，可能成為工具、建築材料，或完全出乎意料的東西。

自然探玩是一種親手實作、發生在真實世界與當下的學習。這裡有科學、創意、解決問題、團隊合作、野生動物，也有大量的遊戲與探索。更重要的是，孩子有時間好奇、實驗、發現，並跟著自己的想法繼續探索。

這些真實的經驗，讓孩子慢慢建立與自然世界更深的連結，也培養他們探索、提問、創造，以及自己想辦法解決問題的信心。

What do kids learn when they have the time and space to explore nature for themselves? 🌿

They notice things. They ask questions. They make connections.

A frog becomes a chance to talk about adaptation. A pile of stones becomes an engineering challenge. A bug leads to more questions. A stick becomes a tool, a building material, or something completely unexpected.

Nature Play is hands on, real world learning happening in real time. There’s science, creativity, problem solving, teamwork, wildlife, and plenty of play. But just as importantly, there’s time to wonder, experiment, make discoveries, and follow an idea wherever it leads.

These experiences help kids build a deeper connection with the natural world, while developing the confidence to explore, question, create, and figure things out for themselves.

(English 👇）🌿 我們喜歡這個地點的其中一個原因，就是這裡的生物多樣性很高，一個晚上就有機會遇到各式各樣完全不同的野生動物。

昨晚就是很好的例子：我們遇到了 **10 隻蛇，來自 5 個不同的物種**，還有 6 種蛙類、一隻麝香貓，以及蜥蜴、壁虎、鍬形蟲、高腳蛛、竹節蟲、馬陸、螳螂等等，還有很多其他生物。

甚至還發現了幾隻小蛇。🥹

但老實說，我最喜歡的部分，是聽到客人回去之後形容這次體驗是「a genuinely once in a lifetime opportunity（真正一生難得一次的機會）」。

我很開心我們能讓大家有這樣特別的機會親近自然、認識台灣的野生動物。能和原本可能沒有機會親眼看到這些生物的人，一起分享這些相遇，是我帶領 Night Safari 最喜歡的事情之一。🌿

今年的 Night Safari 只剩下幾場，會一路進行到 9 月底。

One of the reasons I love this particular spot is the diversity — you can encounter so many completely different kinds of wildlife in a single evening.

Last night was a great example: 10 individual snakes representing 5 species, along with 6 species of frogs and toads, a masked palm civet, lizards, geckos, stag beetles, huntsman spiders, stick insects, millipedes, praying mantises, and plenty more.

And we even found a few baby snakes. 🥹

But honestly, my favorite part of the evening was hearing my guest describe the experience afterward as a “genuinely once in a lifetime opportunity.”

I’m so glad we can help people have these kinds of unique opportunities to connect with nature and discover Taiwan’s wildlife. Getting to share these encounters with someone who might not otherwise get the chance to see them is one of my favorite things about leading Night Safaris. 🌿

Last night’s Night Discovery Walk 🌙🔦 was a lucky one! The typhoon had little impact on us, and by nighttime the rain had cleared. In fact, the conditions after rain can be fantastic for finding nocturnal wildlife.

Over the course of the walk, we found:

🐸 Latouche’s frog, Swinhoe’s frog, Fujian large-headed frog, rice field frog
🐸 Spot-legged tree frog (invasive ), Asian common toad
🐍 Habu
🦎 Japalura, gecko
🦂 Vinegaroon
🕷️ Spiders—including a huntsman eating a cricket!
🦀 Freshwater crab, 🦐 shrimp
🦗 Praying mantis, stick insect
🪱 At least 4 species of millipedes (one glows with UV light!)
🪲 Stag beetle, female rhinoceros beetle
🪱 Hammerhead worm
🐌 Hairy snail and several other snail species
🦉 Collared scops owl (heard)

A fantastic night of discovery! 🌿✨
