順益台灣原住民博物館

Languages are a central and very interesting aspect when looking at the indigenous people of Taiwan. Given that their population is quite low when compared to the remainder of Taiwan´s population, only about 1.4% of all languages spoken in Taiwan are languages of the indigenous people, which are also called “formosan languages”.
The official linguistic classification of formosan languages include:
Atayalic: Atayal, Seediq, Truku
Rukai: Rukai
Northern Formosan: Saisiyat, Thao
Eastern Formosan: Amis, Kavalan, Sakizaya
Southern Formosan: Paiwan, Bunun, Puyuma
Tsouic: Tsou
Kanakanavu
Saaroa
Malayo-Polynesian—Batanic (Philippine): Tao



語言是了解臺灣原住民族時一個非常核心且有趣的面向。相較於臺灣其他人口，原住民族人口比例相當低，因此在臺灣所使用的所有語言中，原住民族語言僅占約 1.4%。這些語言也被稱為「福爾摩沙語（Formosan Languages）」。

他們有時會說：「從以前就是這樣生活啊！」

今年暑假，順益帶孩子走進博物館，找回那種有山系的眼光。

The puyuma people of Taiwan - who call themselves Pinuyumayan or Pinupiyuyan - consist of around 11.000 in population and are predominantly found in the Taitung County located in South-Western Taiwan. What makes them special is that they are a so-called matrilineal society, where the women are the “head of the house” and collectively make important decision for the villages. Known for their strong warrior culture and tradition as well as textile arts, one festival that stands out in particular when looking at the Paiwan people is the Monkey Festival, which takes place annually between December and the start of January. The two-part ceremony functions as a rite of passage for young boys and involved these young men passing through trials to become part of the warriors of their people. For example, one of these trials includes piercing a straw monkey with bamboo spears to show their hunting skills and courage.

臺灣卑南族人口約為 11,000 人，主要分布於臺灣東南部的臺東縣。卑南族特別之處在於他們被稱為母系社會，女性是「家中的核心」，並共同參與部落重要事務的決策。卑南族以強烈的勇士文化、傳統，以及織品藝術聞名。

在卑南族的重要祭儀中，特別值得注意的是「猴祭」。猴祭每年約於 12 月至隔年 1 月初舉行。這項儀式分為兩個部分，具有成年禮的意義，讓年輕男孩透過各種試煉，成為族群中的勇士。例如，其中一項試煉是以竹矛刺向草紮成的猴子，用來展現他們的狩獵技巧與勇氣。

2026 年國際博物館日以 “Museums Uniting a Divided World” 為主題，強調博物館作為橋樑，促進不同文化、社群與世代之間的理解與對話。

博物館中的文物，是一段段文化相遇的線索。從一件文物的用途、材料、造型與紋飾中，我們可以看見不同生活經驗如何彼此連結，並在族人的使用與創作中形成新的文化意義。

比如，本館館藏「火藥筒」為靈感。火藥筒承載不同文化間的交易歷史、火器技術、狩獵生活與工藝美感；其牛角造型、木製筒身、貝類鑲嵌與菱形紋樣，與台灣原住民文化符號的交織。

因此透過手作，我們邀請觀眾看見：文化多元不是隔閡，而是理解與連結的起點。

【3 Days to Go｜May 18 International Museum Day Special Event — See You on May 16 & 17】




The theme of International Museum Day 2026 is “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” highlighting museums as bridges that foster understanding and dialogue among different cultures, communities, and generations.

Objects in museums are clues to moments of cultural encounter. Through an object’s function, materials, form, and patterns, we can see how different life experiences become connected and how new cultural meanings are formed through Indigenous use and creativity.

For example, this year’s activity draws inspiration from the museum’s collection object, the “powder horn.” The powder horn reflects histories of exchange between different cultures, firearm technology, hunting practices, and craft aesthetics. Its horn-shaped form, wooden body, shell inlay, and diamond-shaped patterns reveal the interweaving of technology, materials, and cultural symbols of Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples.

Through hands-on creation, we invite visitors to see that cultural diversity is not a barrier, but a starting point for understanding and connection.
