From sake factory to creative playground 🎭✨
As part of the “Festival and International Networking” class, last week SAC students explored the vibrant world of Huashan 1914 Creative Park with a special guided field trip led by Pu LIN, Art and Public Service Director of Huashan 1914 Creative Park.
During the visit, students stepped inside some of Huashan’s unique cultural spaces — including Umay Theater, Arch Hall, Fruit Wine Dance Studio, and the iconic Legacy Live House — discovering how historic industrial architecture can be transformed into dynamic artistic and festival venues.
Originally established in 1914 during the Japanese colonial period as a sake brewery, Huashan later became the Taipei Wine Factory before industrial production ceased in 1987. Rather than disappearing into history, the site was reborn as one of Taiwan’s most important cultural and creative hubs — where heritage, contemporary art, performance, music, exhibitions and creative industries all come together.
Today, Huashan is not only home to galleries, theatres, cinemas and creative spaces, but also presents major festivals including the Huashan Children’s Arts Festival and Jade Music Fest in Asia 🎶🎨
A huge thank you to Director Pu LIN for sharing the stories, visions and behind-the-scenes perspectives of one of Taiwan’s most iconic cultural landmarks!
