Topic: Human Rights Under Religious Persecution
Islam first rose in the 7th century and spread across the Arabian Peninsula. Islam, which is widely recognized in today's society, is more than just a religion. In a broader sense, Islam is the basis for consideration of social setups, ideological systems, political and economic development, and cultural patterns. Muslims (the followers of Islam) rely on Islam as their spiritual sustenance and adhere to Islamic precepts as a rule of life. Since it covers a wide range and has a large number of believers, many different factions have emerged, the most important of which are Sunni and Shiites.
Religious persecution is a discriminatory policy and act that has systematically adopted a series of activities for a certain person or group based on the grounds of a certain religious belief or lack of such belief. Among the more common acts include deprivation of citizenship, abuse, murder, massacre and even genocide, etc., and such actions are often regarded internationally as a persecution of basic human rights. However, it must be emphasized that the scope of the definition of religious persecution is rather vague and is not limited to Islam. It may be the conflict between religions or the division within religions. Religious persecution has occurred in various religions, notable examples include the Witch-Hunt, the reconstructions of a large amount of churches which changed into mosques by Ottoman Turkish Empire, the Cultural Revolution in China, the Rohingya incident, and the Xinjiang ethnic purification campaign.
Struggles between Sunni and Shiite has persisted throughout the history, and there are also quite a lot of cases of Sunni and Shiite attacking minorities. To some extent, the combat between Sunni and Shiite often transcends the realm of religion. In today's complex international relations, national interest-based thinking is way more dominant, while sectarian and national interests often bring serious problems in the balance of human rights violations. Delegates are expected to search for solutions that address humanitarian issues of the cases provided by the dais team and seek for preventive measures to avoid similar events.
