This weekend, the instructors of Hwa Rang and Yul Gok Center from participated in an intensive sparring training seminar with the Solovey Team from Ukraine, led by Master Oleg and Sabum Katya. It was an exhausting but rewarding seminar where we focused on distance and timing through drills and exercises designed to build a strong foundation for attacks and counters.

A big thank you to the MTF Association and the organizing team led by Master Yong Kin Chong for making this valuable training possible.

In this video, let’s put a Taekwon-Do twist on the viral “Sock and Shoe Challenge.” Instead of tying our shoelaces while standing on one leg. Let’s put on our sparring gear while balancing on one leg! 🥋

This is more than just a challenge—it’s a powerful functional training and rehab tool. It tests critical health markers like balance, single-leg strength, and joint mobility all at once.

Try this as a warm-up before your next sparring session! 👊🔥

Endurance & Training Application 🏃🏻

Children often seem to have endless endurance when they are having fun. They don’t focus on fatigue and naturally regulate their pace. However, when they become bored, they may appear tired—this is usually a sign of boredom rather than true physical fatigue. Simply changing to a more engaging activity can quickly re-energize them.

Endurance in children is best developed through play and physical activity. In our Taekwon-Do classes, it is built naturally through continuous aerobic and dynamic exercises. There is no need to isolate endurance training; instead, using a variety of activities and changing the pace helps maintain engagement and keeps students active throughout the class.

Students should understand that endurance means being able to perform activities for longer periods without stopping, which is essential for improving their Taekwon-Do performance.

Practical Exercise 💡

A simple exercise to develop hand use, footwork, and sparring awareness (for both kids and adults) is as follows:

Stand at an appropriate distance from the student and throw soft discs at belt level or higher. The student must dodge, avoid, or block the object. This activity is fun and engaging, and it can be progressed by requiring the student to counterattack after each defensive action.

06/04/2026

This activity is part of the Warm-Up Games listed in the Instructor’s Guide of the Taekwon-Do Kids Development Program. It is called “Pluck the Turkey,” and the following is a simple variation.

In this game, several long, colored ribbons are attached to each student’s belt to represent the feathers of a turkey. The objective is for students to “pluck” the feathers by pulling the ribbons from each other’s belts, simulating a light and controlled sparring situation.

For younger children, especially those in kindergarten, the activity can be adapted to reduce tension, fear, or the sense of losing. Instead of competing against each other, the instructor can take on the role of the “turkey.” The instructor moves around while the students attempt to pluck the feathers (ribbons) from the instructor’s belt.

The game ends when all the feathers have been removed. While instructors or assistants may get a bit tired, this variation provides a good physical workout and, more importantly, helps prevent negative experiences for young students by minimizing feelings of failure or loss.

Give it a try in your class!

Here comes Part 2 of our Hand Conditioning video series! 💪 👊

This time we’re working on Knuckle Push-Ups (“Ap Joomuk Push-Ups”).

Remember—build up gradually to develop proper technique:

✔ Parallel stance
✔ Forefist middle punch position
✔ Controlled movement on the floor

Train smart and stay consistent. Try it at home or anywhere!
