🌀 Eye-Deceived in Tainan: Finding the Hidden Path
Is what you see truly what is there? This summer, the Department of Psychology and the Department of History at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), in collaboration with Ritsumeikan University (Japan), invite you to a sensory spectacle that will flip your perception upside down!
We have transformed the reflections and shimmering waters of the Tainan Canal into a world of wonder. Here, boats appear to warp and distort, and seemingly normal slopes hide deep, unpredictable spatial traps. This exhibition merges the visual mysteries of psychology with the historic charm of the ancient canal city, challenging your brain's natural instincts.
We cordially invite you to visit and discover the hidden "mental" path flickering between reality and illusion!

The Sentinel

🖼️ Exhibit Title | Knot of Eras
💡 Concept |This installation is based on the optical illusion of the Ames Room, blended with the historical aesthetic of the Ming-Qing period to recreate a distorted yet seemingly ordinary space. When viewed from a specific angle, people inside appear to grow or shrink—a visual metaphor for how perspective shapes our understanding of reality and history.
✨ Illusion Effect |The shape of this room is actually irregular and slanted. But when we look at it from a specific angle, our brain automatically interprets the 3D space as a flat 2D image. So when someone moves around inside the room, they appear to grow or shrink—it’s just our perspective playing tricks on us!

Reality Blurred

🖼️ Exhibit Title | Knot of Eras
💡 Concept | This work conbines two Japanese colonial-era buildings, the Department of History building at NCKU and Tainan Theological College and Seminary, inviting viewers to rethink history not as something fixed, but as something that shifts like an illusion, shaped by perspective and time.
✨ Illusion Effect |The Hollow-Face illusion occurs when a concave face model is perceived as a convex face, as the brain automatically interprets the hollow surface as a protruding one based on past experiences. This illusion arises from the human predisposition to perceive faces as convex, and even when lighting is inverted or the face moves, it still appears to follow the viewer.
