This is in a belated celebration of the LLPs, myself, Edward Chen, and (crazy) Catherine Wu. Five up and five down. In many years of competing as a coach, I've coached some teams that went undefeated at tournaments. This is my first time as a debater. Also, it's great to see the crew at IBST.

Here is the updated information and the page of pre-camp homework to add.

If we do not get 12 people, I will not hold this camp.

As it now stands the camp will be AT IBST during normal school hours and cost 500 NTD (for the lunches)

To whom it may concern:

I would like to invite your school and its middle school (exiting grade 5-8th grade) students to sign up for the 9th annual Taiwan Summer Debate Camp (see the details below). You can distribute the attached forms to your students as well as to your staff.
In the IBST offered debate camps to all schools, but, unfortunately, this is harder to do online. For that reason, again, we will probably restrict this camp to IBST students though you may tell your friends at other schools and possible convince me.
While IBST has offered nine camps, this camp continues our specialization in low cost camps for middle school/junior high students. In the past IBST camps offered different levels, but now other camps cater to older students, so this camp targets younger students both at IBST and at other interested institutions who want to introduce younger students to parliamentary and other forms of debate and have them involved in age-appropriate activities and debating age-targeted resolutions.
As a special feature of this camp, we’ll offer more intensive instruction in Lincoln-Douglas (LD) featured both at NSDA as well at past NIFTYs. This does NOT mean that students will be given or taught a plan, but they’ll be offered an opportunity to (a) receive feedback on their own plans and (b) have live matches on these topics.
Due to the lowering of the Covid-19 lockdown security level, this camp will take place AT IBST with a backup, online site in case of a change in lockdown status. The camp will run during normal school hours.
Students will be asked to wear their masks and will be seated in the main seating rooms in appropriate seating. For the actual debates, students will move into smaller classrooms and sit at safe social distances. During lunch, they will be separated. All of this is in accordance with procedures developed during the February camp.
If the lock-down status changes, this will be an online camp.

Sincerely,
Dr. Daniel R. Fruit

WORLD SCHOOL TAIWAN DEBATE Summer CAMP

Dr. Daniel R. Fruit and the International Bilingual School at the South Tainan Science Park (IBST), with the cooperation of the National Nanke International Experimental High School (NNKIEH), will offer the second annual annual Middle school World Taiwan Debate Camp. The camp will take place from August 9th to 14th (Monday to Saturday) 2021. The camp will provide intensive instruction and ample practice matches in Asian Parliamentary debate used at the World School Debating Championship as well as Lincoln-Douglas debate. As many as 50 students leaving grades 5th to 8th grade may sign up for the camp with spaces going on a prioritized first-come first serve basis.
Students at the debate camp normally stay on-campus at IBST in dorms provided by NNKIEH, IBST’s sister school.
The camp will be held at IBST during the regular school day. The camp will make provisions to bring students to the school Saturday from the train station. Within the instruction room, Dr. Fruit's room, all students will take appropriate medical security precautions, i.e. wearing masks social distancing etc in accordance with procedures used in the February camp.
Students need to eat breakfast before the camp. The 500 NTD fee will be used to purchase lunch. Helpers will order the lunch, and it will be delivered to the school.
As a backup, this camp would be held online at The IBST Debate Camp https://discord.gg/kUQpTuPx. It is requested that students also open a Zoom account. If the camp experiences a lack of judges, we can then record matches and judge them after the day's activities.
Due to this being an all on-line camp, there is NO CHARGE. However, students must still sign up by sending the attached entry form to Dr. Fruit

A tentative outline of topics for this camp includes:

Day 4: WSC debates, case and off-case construction, BP and AP debates
Day 5: resolution analysis, negative strategies, debate off day 1

For juniors and newcomers, the camp will provide intensive instruction and ample practice matches in the World School style (Asian Parliamentary) and National Championship (American policy) styles of debate.

During the day, participants will engage in intensive learning activities designed to improve their skills and thinking, as well as introduce them to Parliamentary and Policy Debate. With students coming from all-over Taiwan as well as IBST, participants should have plenty of opportunities to hone their skills, as well as make new friends, due to the purposefully heterogeneous grouping of participants.
Due to the request of many students, the Camp will offer a more extended introduction to Policy debate (in the Cicero/National Championship format) in addition to the usual attention to Asian Parliamentary Debate.

A tentative outline of topics for the junior camp includes:
Day 1: Policy debate: speaker responsibilities; harms/needs cases; the audience.

Day 3: Counterplans; Full length policy; Cicero-style “mini-tournament”
Day 4: Transition to Parliamentary; Tainan trip; speaker responsibilities
Day 5: reso analysis; fact debates and value debates
Day 6: negative strategies; resolution analysis; mini-tournament part 1
Day 7: Negative strategy; “mini-tournament” conclusion

A tentative outline of topics for the senior camp include*:
Day 1: Resolution analysis. Fact debates versus value debates.
Day 2: Negative strategies, resolution analysis, “policy” debates
Day 3: Advanced preparation; core values and closings; AP mini-tournament
Day 4: From 2 teams to 4: the top half of a debate
Day 5: From 2 teams to 4: the bottom half
Day 6: Stakeholder analysis and impacts
Day 7: Debating with your “allies,” mini-tournament conclusion
* This may be subject to some revision

For the camp, students will need to pay NTD 5,000. This will cover the costs of the dorm fees, food, instruction, materials, and any incidental fees.
Students wishing to participate need to email Dr. Daniel R. Fruit ([email protected]> with the attached form.
