The IPSD 2025 class was busy working on a PGIS for Maolin! The class tested a mobile mapping app and a paper based map and symbol method. The local residents gave great input! It was very hot but all the students put in a great effort as we fine tune our data collection methods!

Restoring rivers and streams!
On June 7th, the symposium for the course "Restoration of Rivers and Streams" finally kicked off, featuring three amazing presentations from the students and a wonderful sharing session from the panelists. With their hard work and dedicated research, students from different countries and departments presented their respective projects, including studies on Zhong-Gua Creek in Nantou, Fu-An Creek and Pi-Liao Pond in Tainan. The panelists, coming from various departments, not only provided their insights on each project but also gave constructive feedback to the students, creating a positive research ambience for every participant in the symposium.
The symposium also marked the end of the course. During this semester, the students learned academic knowledge about rivers and streams, visited different counties for field studies, operated various tools and equipment, and engaged in vibrant discussions with their peers and instructors. Since this course is an English-taught course, the students also practiced their English skills throughout the whole course, making the experience more memorable for them.
If you are interested in the course, come join us in the Spring 2025 semester. You can also join the CPSD program for more courses like this!

Cigu! It’s nice to see you again!
On May 15th, students from the PEPM class visited Cigu and learned about the lagoon, saltpans, oyster farming culture, and the conflict between fish farming and solar panel installations. They also visited the local neighborhoods, trying their best to understand the issues the residents were encountering.
On May 20th, the Water Sustainability Lab brought the PEPM students back to Cigu for a deeper engagement with the locals during the workshop on Participatory Environmental Planning in Coastal Areas.
During the workshop, Professor Hsiao-Wen Wang and the team presented an information session and conducted various activities to engage participants in conversations, bridging the gap between academic concepts of climate change adaptation planning and the challenges the locals faced in daily life.
It was great opportunity for learning, listening, sharing and acting for sustainability!
