An English Teacher's Confession: I Was Wrong About Grammar

When I first came to Taiwan, observing how kids learned English, I was baffled by how they were being taught. Grammar, for me at least, was the least significant in the English language. It was inherent, hidden, almost invisible. Whereas in Taiwan, it is the main focus of English, alongside vocabulary, rendering me completely awestruck.

However, in recent years, particularly in the last six months, many of my students have taken international exams, namely the IELTS, TOEFL, and the TOEIC. Many of them, if not all, were hampered by grammar.

My conclusion is, "Stop telling your kids that grammar isn't important!"
True. English conversation is important, but why are your kids learning English, for conversation or for academics?
If it's for conversation, then take a speaking class.
Schools and cram schools prepare students for the university entrance exams, and lousy grammar won't get you far.

If you think the way English grammar is taught in Taiwan is confusing, think again.

Watch how Chinese grammar is taught in the US, then maybe, just maybe, you'll think twice about saying grammar is irrelevant to English learning.
