Hi All please register for the following:
Free Open Workshop Hosted by (In)Justice International TASA & Liverpool Hope University

Environmental Destruction: The Oppressive Effects of War, Pollution, Capital and Climate Change

**Wednesday December 14, 2022**

(In)Justice International are proud to put out a call for attendees papers/abstracts for our December Workshop which is open to all academics, researchers, students (of any level), Barristers, reporters and people who have 'lived experienced' of the devastating traumas of environmental destruction.

The workshop invites holistic, intersectional approaches relating to war, oppression, pollution, neoliberalism, discrimination and climate change. For example, one could take the influence of capital and, by association, neoliberalism where the drive for profit can create unnecessary pollution across the world. Global organisations often seek the least expensive means of production often characterised by a low paid (poverty stricken) workforce. Allied to the weaker Health and Safety regulations in many countries, productivity targets are often enforced.

As a consequence, any shortcuts that result in greater productivity at the expense of the environment or working conditions are either ignored or encouraged which, in turn, can result in the ‘dumping’ of waste products as opposed to recycling or disposal processes that cost more money. Indeed, this ‘dumping’ tends to take place in the poorer neighbourhoods and, therefore, affects those more susceptible to poverty than more elite sections of society (see https://www.injustice-intl.org/environment).

War on the other hand can result in similarly devastating consequences. The use of heavy ammunition, the raising of buildings and power stations war exacerbates levels of pollution. In addition, war intensifies relations appertaining to forced migration (and subsequent discriminatory practices) alongside concerns over energy supplies with those countries that have agreed to zero emissions targets beginning to resort back to the burning of fossil fuels. All-in-all, there is an exacerbation of the causes of climate change and an increase in relative poverty if not absolute poverty. And with climate change, the poorest are disproportionately affected.

These are but a few of the examples that can lead to both an intersectional and holistic account of the overwhelming havoc being caused by environmental destruction. From whatever the preferred approach of the speaker/researcher on the subject, (In)Justice International welcomes the submission of abstracts.

Abstracts can be sent as of now and need to have been received prior to the 23rd of November, 2022 and sent to [email protected]. Successful applicants will be notified on or before the 24th of November, 2022. Upon acceptance, PowerPoint slides need to be sent by no later than December 7th.

World Convention in Finland 2023

Injustice in a World of Uncertainty

International Convention in South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences

Mikkeli, Finland

**28th-31st March, 2023**

Overview

War, climate change and economic instability pose unpredictable security threats in today's world. Are societies safe, and safe for whom? In the second World Convention of the network (In)Justice International taking place in Mikkeli, Finland, we tackle the question from the perspective of minorities and others with marginal positions in societies and mainstream cultures.

We ask in the convention, how does increased insecurity affect people in marginal positions due to their Indigenous backgrounds, ethnicity, age, gender and sexuality, disability and illness, socio-economic position and class? We also want the convention to inquire or examine if these insecure individuals are left to struggle by themselves and why. Are they excluded from existing security networks, or are there any networks at all? How do these global, dangerous developments affect their sense of safety, trust in society and abilities to use welfare services? And how are their needs met?

We call for abstracts for presentations in the conference by scholars, NGOs, barristers and practitioners in the fields of sociology and social policy, anthropology, geography, critical economics, political sciences and criminology, gender studies, youth studies and disability studies. Abstracts or proposed talks from people who have ‘lived’ experience of this desperation or have reported upon it would also be welcome.

**Please Note the Change in Dates**

Abstracts

You can send an abstract to [email protected] by December 1st 2022. Acceptance will be informed by January 2nd 2023. As this is a hybrid Convention, you can present either onsite, on-line or pre-recorded (to primarily overcome time differentials).

Free Postgraduate+ Online Workshop September, 2022

"War, Economic Strife and the Long-Lasting Intersectional Effects on Refugees, Minorities, Disabled People and the Global Environment"

Wednesday 14 September 2022

🚩Outline:
This Online Workshop consists of two sessions of three/four speakers. Talks/presentations will last for 15 minutes (maximum) only.

After the first four speakers in session one has finished, the attendees/audience will be put in breakout rooms for 20 minutes to discuss what they have heard and formulate questions. On return, there will be a 20-minute Q&A session.

A ten-minute break will follow.

Session two, will take the same format. Assuming that there are eight speakers in total, and if the workshop starts at 12.00 (GMT), then it will finish around 15.50 (GMT).

🚩Agenda:
Session 1
12-12.10 (GMT) Brief Introduction.
12.10-13.10 Four fifteen-minute presentations.
13.10-13.30 Breakout sessions
13.30-13.50 Q&A
13-50-14.00 Break

Session 2
14.00-15.00 Four fifteen-minute presentations.
15.00-15.20 Breakout session
15.20-15.40 Q&A
15.40-15.50 Closing remarks

🚩To check the times where you are, please click here
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20220612T180000&p1=303&p2=250&p3=152

🚩Presentations in this event could lead to publication in either our journals (please click here) or books (click here).
https://anthempress.com/crime-criminality-and-injustice-hb

It could also secure a place at our World Convention in Finland 2023 (see CfPs here).
https://www.injustice-intl.org/copy-of-call-for-abstracts-papers-2

🚩Topics and Format:
Oral sessions will be conducted online (in person or possibly by a pre-recorded video given global time differences) and be based on the workshop title in accordance with the intersectional nature of (In)Justice International’s investigations and the preferences of the presenter. For example, refugees can be disabled and Indigenous or could be LGBTIQ+ individuals/groups facing discrimination and persecution during and after war. How have different groups, who have long faced discrimination, stigmatisation and persecution, been treated and how can recompense be facilitated? Economic strife - whether it be caused by conflicts or its widespread consequences, COVID-19, increased costs in natural resources or 'stagflation' - is relevant in that war can either cause or exacerbate divisive economic forces impacting upon these aforementioned individuals.

These are but a few examples of the diverse approaches that we would like to see.

🚩Presentations and Audience:
We would like to see this workshop limited to students at all levels and reporters, barristers and people with ‘lived’ experience of such atrocities. We would like attendees to actively participate in the Workshop breakout sessions wherever possible. When taken with the actual presentations, this would not only enhance the learning process but also contribute to the success of the event. Unfortunately, proceedings will only be conducted in English although some help may be available.

🚩Time Differentials:
To mitigate for the different time zones, successful Canadian presenters, for example, will be placed in the second session starting at 14.00 (GMT), whereas successful Australian presenters will be placed in the first session starting at 12.10 (GMT). Successful European presenters will be placed in either of the two sessions. Attendees, however, are invited to attend just one full session or both as they see fit to prevent a disruptive atmosphere during the workshop.

🚩Expressions of Interest and Abstracts:
Please send abstracts to [email protected] by no later than August 30, 2022. Abstracts can be sent any time from now and responses will be promptly sent out after the closing date.

For more information, please contact Simon Prideaux at [email protected].

Dear Colleagues,

After a highly successful inaugural Convention in Taiwan, I am now posting this message to inform you of the 2nd World Convention of (In)Justice International. The Convention will be hosted by the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences in Mikkeli, Finland 28th-31st March, 2023.

For your interest, there are 6 different streams ranging from war-disability-ethnicity-class-precarity-gender and youth. Abstracts specifically written for a particular stream would be greatly appreciated. Nevertheless, when bearing in mind the intersectional nature of (I)I Conventions abstracts for presentations on Disabled and/or ethnic minority people, to name but two examples, and the hardships they face during war, climate change and economic insecurity (both, for instance, in Ukraine or in the UK with the rising energy prices) would also be welcome.

Finally, it is worth noting that contributions to our Conventions will be considered for our book series contracted for publication every two years with Anthem Press. The first of which Crime, Criminalisation and Injustice is due out at the end of 2022. The one relating to the Finland Convention will be published in 2024 and will have devoted sections to the streams in the Finland Convention and the ensuing event in 2024.
