After the Forum: Continuing Exchange in the Field, Market, and City
Following the successful completion of the two-day 2026 Asia-Pacific Banana Resilience Forum, our international guests and speakers continued their journey beyond the conference venue. Through visits to research facilities, banana fields, local markets, harbor areas, and cultural sites, participants gained a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s banana industry and its connection with local communities.
On the first day after the Forum, guests attended the opening ceremony of the Seedling Research and Development Center at the Taiwan Banana Research Institute, learning about our future directions in healthy seedling production, tissue culture, automation, and industry services. In the afternoon, the group visited the Fengshan Tropical Horticultural Experiment Branch, TARI, for further exchange on tropical fruit research, breeding, and practical applications.
On Saturday, the exchange moved to the most fundamental site of banana production: the field. During the field visit, participants observed banana cultivation practices, disease risks, plant growth, fertilization, and farm management conditions in Taiwan. Experts from different countries also exchanged views on reducing fertilizer and pesticide inputs, controlling plant size for specific market needs, improving farmer adoption of healthy seedlings, and translating disease management strategies into practical farm operations.
In the afternoon, the group visited Donggang, where guests experienced the local fishing harbor, Wangye boat culture, food, religious traditions, and community life. Although bananas were the central theme of the Forum, agricultural exchange is never only about technology. It is also about people, land, culture, and the local context in which agriculture takes place.
On Sunday, the visit continued in Kaohsiung’s Asia New Bay Area. Starting from Glory Pier, the group walked along the waterfront through key sites of Kaohsiung’s urban transformation, including Pier-2 Art Center, Gushan, the ferry to Cijin, and Cijin itself. We also passed by the historic Banana Pier area, a meaningful site connected to Taiwan’s banana export history. For Taiwan’s banana industry, Kaohsiung Harbor represents not only trade, but also agricultural memory and local identity.
During the city visits, we also conducted market observations on bananas and other fruits, discussing retail prices, product specifications, marketing channels, production costs, and selling prices. These discussions raised important questions shared by many banana-producing countries: How can farmers receive fair returns? How can market prices better support production? How can production costs, company purchase prices, and consumer prices form a healthier value chain?
Through these post-Forum visits, we were reminded that banana resilience is not only discussed in conference rooms through topics such as TR4, healthy seedlings, low-carbon production, and organic farming. It must also be understood in the field, in the market, and through the history of cities and harbors. Each country faces different banana challenges, but through field-based exchange and face-to-face dialogue, we can identify more opportunities for collaboration and mutual learning.
We sincerely thank all domestic and international guests, speakers, and partners for their participation and support. We also appreciate the assistance of all organizations involved in arranging the visits. The Taiwan Banana Research Institute will continue to support banana resilience in Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific region through healthy seedlings, field technologies, disease management, and industry services.
